Nigerian exporters of agricultural produce have continued to increase the quantity and value of good exported over the years.
According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics; for 2020, Nigeria exported agricultural products worth N321.5 billion. This represents an increase of 19.6% compared to N269.8 billion recorded in 2019, and a 6.27% increase when compared to N302.28 billion recorded in 2018.
Despite the increase recorded in exports, Nigeria witnessed an increase in imported agricultural goods by 78.58% in 2020 compared to 2019.
The country imported agricultural goods worth N1.71 trillion in 2020 as against N959.5 billion in 2019.
You can see that there is still a huge gap to be covered by Nigerian exporters. So the market is wide open for exporters to move in and make dollars.
Despite the value of crude oil exportation, agriculture still remains the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy; it provides the greatest source of livelihood for majority of Nigerians.
The agricultural sector is the largest sector of the National economy, and it is responsible for providing employment for more than 67% of the entire labour force in the country.
Despite the great potential provided by agriculture in Nigeria, there are so many impediments standing on the way of agriculture. These problems, according to the Food and Agricultural Development Organization of the United Nations, the country was not able to increase the value-added per capital by up to 1% in the last 20 years.
The report also shows that about $10 billion annual export opportunities from groundnut, cocoa, palm oil, and cotton have been lost by the country from steady decline in the production of these commodities.
The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has been appealing to farmers to increase food production in the country as the nation does not have money to import food any longer.
