The Federal Government Of Nigeria Begins Dry Season Wheat Harvest: Targets 1,000 Metric Tonnes From Gombe State
The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has commenced the harvesting of Wheat from it's dry season wheat farm in Papa community Nefada Local Government Area, LGA in Gombe State, Nigeria.
The government said that it would be harvesting about 1,000 Metric Tonnes of wheat from 200 hectares farm in the state in order to help the country's wheat production and ameliorate the impact in the reduction of wheat imports caused by Russia and Ukrainian war.
Our country and many other countries import a large percentage of wheat from Ukraine and the war in that region has drastically reduced the supply of wheat from the country.
However, the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Agricultural Land Development Authority NALDA announced recently that it has started harvesting the commodity from its dry season Wheat farm in Gombe state, adding that it is expecting additional 1000 Metric Tonnes from other states.
Mr. Paul Ikonne, Executive Secretary of NALDA disclosed in a statement in Abuja.
He also said that they are harvesting from the farmland that was cultivated In December 2021 by one hundred women and youths from the community.
The beneficiaries were provided with two tractors, agricultural chemicals, fertilizers, irrigation pumps, improved hand tools, land clearing, and technical guidance by NALDA.
The NALDA Team witnessed the harvesting, thrashing, and bagging of the produce by the women and youths when the team visited the farm.
This shows that Nigeria can produce wheat in large quantities according to the Director of Engineering of NALDA, Olusegun Owolabi, he stated at the site while representing Mr. Ikonne.
The Director said that the feat was worthy of emulation and celebration as Nigeria has been spending huge scarce foreign exchange on wheat importation into the country annually.
This prompted NALDA to dive into the matter and change the narrative. “This gathering is the celebration of the outcome of the partnership between NALDA and Gombe State Government late last year.” Ikonne said.
He added, “The authorities observed that wheat, an agricultural product, is the third item in the national importation list, and resolved to re-write history on this. This made NALDA to collaborate with some states including Gombe to produce wheat.”
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Gombe State, Magaji Gettado, said that the farm will go a long way in improving the livelihood of the farmers in the state.
He stated that before the establishment of the farm, youths in the community used to migrate to other states, like the neighboring Taraba state and other towns to earn a living. But currently they are in Gombe state Practising dry season farming.
One of the problems facing the country as regards the quality of wheat for exports is the issue of excessive pesticides in the produce.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) uncovered adulterated Wheat in Gombe market recently. Gombe State Coordinator, James Agada, revealed this during a media briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Culture.
He said that 80 bags of pesticide-treated wheat meant for planting instead of consumption, were sold by one Adamu Hassan, but he failed to enlighten the buyers that it was for planting but not for consumption.
Agada said “As part of our routine surveillance, we gathered intelligence that chemically-treated wheat meant for farmers has been diverted into the market in Gombe for sale to consumers at a much reduced price.
“The chemical used in treating this is a pesticide, and it also has a fungi effect, so as this is growing in the soil it will resist the attack of fungicides and insects.
Something that is dangerous to insects and now someone is ingesting it directly. It will impact on neurological issues, as well as the proliferation of kidney issues.
We praise the effort of NALDA in coming into the critical issue of wheat cultivation in Nigeria and challenge the status quo.
We believe that in no distant time, if the momentum is maintained the country will soon start singing a new tune in wheat farming.
We promise to constantly bring to you issues of interest concerning wheat farming in Nigeria because; it is an important commodity that affects everybody, both young and old.
