Mushroom Production Business: The New Goldmine In Nigeria – According To The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC)
The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) says that mushroom business in Nigeria today is very lucrative and is encouraging farmers and other investors to key into the agro-business venture.
According to the council, mushroom production is the new goldmine and the country can significantly improve its foreign exchange earnings by investing in the commodity.
This revelation was made by the Executive Director of the NEPC during a capacity building workshop organized for members of the National Mushroom Growers, Processors and Marketing Association of Nigeria (NAM-GP-MAN) in Enugu, Enugu state recently.
The Guardian Newspaper also reported that a mushroom farmer based in Niger state, Qudus Haruna, who described mushroom farming as one of the most profitable agro-businesses in the country, said “Nigeria is abundantly blessed with the dark loamy soil, that is best suitable for its cultivation, if well cultivated will serve as another money spinner for the country”.
“Mushrooms are easy to grow indoors, especially because they don’t require light. Cremini, enoki, maitake, and white button mushrooms can all be grown indoors, but each type has special growing needs.
“Mushrooms can also be grown in a garden, they can tolerate some light, but the spot you choose should stay mostly dark or in low light – cool, and humid environments. Most mushrooms grow best in temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.”
The Executive Director said that the country has been blessed with the right climate and ecological conditions to support mushroom cultivation, and if properly done, could make the country a major player in global mushroom production.
He advised that Nigeria should not play second fiddle in mushroom production as its value has significantly increased in the international market.
With N50, 000 a small scale mushroom farmer can start small and scale mushroom farm to test the market before investing more money into the business.
It is always advisable in the agricultural arena to start with a pilot project, in Nigeria mushroom farming as a business is new to many people, they don’t understand it, that is why many entrepreneurs who want to invest in it want to start small first.
For any farmer to be successful in mushroom farming; especially if you are interested in the export to the European Union, you must consider greenhouse technology; it enables farmers to grow the produce round the year, and prevents pests and diseases from attacking the crops.
Greenhouse technology helps farmers to grow their crops organically; this is what the international buyers, especially from the EU want mostly.
There was a time Nigerian farmers exported mushroom powder as part of its agricultural produce, it was rejected by the European Union (EU) on the grounds that it was not organically produced, and that it contains aflatoxins.
To solve this problem, farmers should take the pains to adopt the greenhouse technology.
With a small amount of investible funds, smallholder farmers can acquire greenhouse tunnels – 10 – 15 meters long; and 8 meters wide. These are readily available from local suppliers. This will enable farmers growing mushroom grow the crop all seasons and also enjoy faster growth.
To be honest, I enjoy eating mushroom, but seeing it to buy is a big problem in the country, before you can buy it in Lagos, you have to visit the big supermarkets and the price is so prohibitive that you have to spend huge amount to buy what can be enough for the family.
