Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), CBI Provide Market Access for 17 SMEs in Ginger Value Chain
- Nigeria currently produces 31 million metric tonnes of ginger annually.
I have been revealing to our members the secret code of making lots of money in foreign exchange from export of spices. You may be underrating these little known spices, but people are making millions monthly from the export of these commodities.
We are looking at one of them in this article, it is known as ginger. If you come to mile 12 market in Ketu Lagos today, you will see such a large quantity of ginger being offered to you for peanuts. You know that we lack preservation facilities; why not take advantage of the situation now.
For Those Ready To Move In And Succeed In The Business, look at This:
In a bid to boost the export of ginger, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) in collaboration with the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) of the Netherlands is currently on a Market Orientation Mission (MOM) to Netherlands and France with 17 Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) in the Ginger value chain.
The objective of the programme which is hinged on the Nigeria Sustainability Ginger Programme (NGSP 2021-2025) is to leverage the potential of the commodity to get more value and diversify its market through sustainability, improved quality, certification, organic production and refined processing.
According to a statement by Ndubueze Okeke; Nigeria ranks 3rd in production of Ginger with 31 million metric tonnes annually, after India and China. The product is also in very high demand in the world market due to its natural and distinct features of pungency, aroma and oil content (oleoresin). Nigeria’s ginger is among the best in the world.
The statement said despite its potential in ginger production, Nigeria accounts for a miserly 3% in the global export market share and it is the least priced due to quality issues caused by dearth of critical infrastructure and lack of cutting-edge technology for processing the commodity thereby resulting in poor market penetration.
The Executive Director/CEO of NEPC, Dr. Ezra Yakusak, explained that “these are the reasons that the CBI is partnering with NEPC to enhance the quality of the commodity through capacity building and market access programmes as well as consideration for the establishment of a Common Facility Centre (CFC) in ginger production hubs in states where it is cultivated and produced for export in Nigeria.”
Activities of the mission will include practical workshops on export market access, visits to companies who are prospective buyers of Nigeria spices in Rotterdam and participation in Food Ingredients Europe (FIE) in Paris, France.
National Sustainable Ginger Platform For Nigerian Ginger Sector:
It was recently reported that 5(five) public and private-sector parties are now working together in the transition to a sustainable ginger sector in Nigeria. They launched the National Sustainable Ginger Platform (NSGP) during a conference on sustainable ginger in Nigeria, set up by CBI.
The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) hosted the conference. “The main purpose of this platform is to bring together stakeholders to develop a joint vision for the ginger sector transition,” says Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, the then Executive Director/CEO of the NEPC.
Public And Private Cooperation:
The 5 parties which launched the NSGP include:
- CBI;
- GIZ/NICOP;
- Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC);
- Standard Organization Nigeria (SON); and
- The National Ginger Association Nigeria (NGAN).
These parties will turn the outcomes of the conference into a strategy for the NSGP. They are also partners in a new CBI project. For this project, they signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU).
CBI Project Supports Nigerian Ginger Sector:
Nigerian ginger is among the best in the world. And it has the potential to add more value and expand its markets. To help the Nigerian ginger sector further, CBI has a new project that supports the transition to a sustainable and high-quality ginger sector in Nigeria. Ms. Louke Koopmans, Senior Programme Manager at CBI explains, “Added value can be achieved by improving quality, sustainability certification, organic and refined processing.” The project involves:
Market development:
This will help Nigerian ginger SMEs become competitive, add value and get market access.
Public-private dialogue:
This will help with effective coordination in the sector through the NSGP.
Service improvement: To help create a functioning service delivery model for the ginger export sector.
Mrs. Pauline Döll, Managing Director at CBI, is pleased with the project. She says, “I am very pleased that we have come to an agreement with all the partners. Small and medium-sized entrepreneurs are very important for the national economy. They are essential for international competitiveness and innovation. We can now work together to support change towards a sustainable ginger sector in Nigeria.”
We have seen that the NEPC and CBI are fully ready to support any SME that wants to venture into production and or exporting of ginger to the EU.
