Black Pepper Export Business In Nigeria: The Secrets You Need To Know In Order To Succeed
There are different types of pepper in the world today; you have black pepper, white pepper, red pepper, green pepper, yellow pepper, and so many other ones.
But in this article, we are going to concentrate on the type of pepper known as black pepper because, Black pepper is one of the most commonly used spices worldwide. It is the largest traded spice worldwide, attracting the highest amount per ton, followed closely by chili pepper.
In this our study, we should not concentrate on the money to be made only but to understand the cultivation of the pepper, packaging, and all the requirements to be met before exporting.
I have seen where people have been arguing that black pepper is the same as Uziza in many forums in Nigeria; after this article you will convince yourself that they are not the same.
Black pepper is a flowering vine in the family of Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, known as a peppercorn, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.
The fruit is a drupe (fleshy fruit with thin skin and a central stone containing the seed) which is about 5 mm in diameter, dark red, and contains a stone which encloses a single pepper seed.
Its scientific name is Piper nigrum and it is from the family of Piperaceae as indicated above.
Overall, the heat level of black pepper is incredibly mild compared to any chili on the Scoville scale, but it does have a level of pungency to it. That spiciness doesn't come from capsaicin, though, the power behind hot peppers. Rather it's a chemical compound named piperine that gives black pepper its heat.
Capsaicin is a colorless irritant phenolic amide C18H27NO3 found in various capsicums that gives hot peppers their hotness and that is used in tropical creams for its analgesic properties.
While piperine on the other hand, is responsible for the black pepper distinct biting quality. Piperine has many pharmacological effects and several health benefits, especially against chronic diseases, such as reduction of insulin-resistance, anti-inflammatory effects, and improvement of hepatic steatosis.
Black pepper, which comes from the Sanskrit word pippali, was once known as black gold. It has one of the longest histories as a sought-after spice, due to its ability to flavor foods, act as a preservative, and add heat to a dish. Black pepper offers a range of health benefits in addition to its flavor-enhancing properties.
Black pepper (Piper Nigrum L.) is an important healthy food owing to its antioxidant, antimicrobial potential and gastro-protective modules. Black pepper, with piperine as an active ingredient, holds rich phytochemistry that also includes volatile oil, oleoresins, and alkaloids.
Black pepper (piper nigrum) is native to Kerala in South West India; though it grows well in the tropics. However, Vietnam happens to be the largest producer and exporter of the commodity.
What is the Difference between Uziza Seed and Regular Black pepper?
The aroma of Uziza seeds is milder than the black pepper. This is expected as piperine content of Uziza seeds is lower than that of black pepper. Piperine as described earlier is responsible for that spicy flavor that the black pepper has.
Uziza seeds on the other hand contains higher levels of volatile oils particularly the linalool, which is responsible for the pleasant floral aroma. This Aroma is absent in the regular black pepper. Instead, the black pepper has a spicy and woody aroma.
The best month to plant pepper in Nigeria
Black pepper can be grown in any month of the year in Nigeria. However, there are best months to plant pepper.
Peppers generally do well in the dry season as they have less chances of getting fungal diseases. However, in the dry season months of October to March, the incidences of white flies and insects are high. These insects transmit viral diseases to pepper plants. Viral diseases have no cure; they can reduce the yield of pepper plants to a terrible level.
Also, in the dry season months of October to March, the incidences of mites are high. Mites can significantly reduce the yield of pepper plants.
In the rainy season months of April, May, June, July, August and September, the availability of water can help in increasing the yield of pepper plants. However, the high incidences of fungal diseases can significantly reduce the yield of pepper plants.
Growing pepper in some months of the year can lead to super normal Returns on Investment (ROI). Harvesting and selling peppers in the months of April to July in Nigeria can lead to a very high profit as few farmers grow peppers during this period.
The above is for those that are interested in farming peppers, but I know that many people will be interested in doing the business without farming it, but you need a little idea how the farming is done and the best time for it.
In our next article on this, we will continue with preparing the pepper for export; this will include drying and packaging.
