If you’re a poultry farmer in Nigeria, understanding the species of birds is the best way to avoid most of the problems with stunted growth, Newcastle infection, height and weight challenges and general carcass quality. Poultry farming in Nigeria, especially broiler farming is fraught with many challenges.
In this article and subsequent ones we are going to take our time and explain in detail what to look out for and precautions to take.
We have heard from farmers countless times that their broilers don’t do very well as the other stocks they raise. It is possible too that they are from the same hatchery but what happens why they don’t grow at the same rate? Many inexperienced poultry farmers are not aware that day old chicks (DOC) can be compromised if they did not get it themselves from the hatchery.
First, note that unless you are getting your chicks directly from the hatchery, they can be compromised. Forget the carton, delivery agents or suppliers can change your chicks for other chicks. This game has been happening and continues to happen unless you pay special attention to your business.
Secondly, general management practice is another determinant of your broiler's performance.
We’ve heard people say that all broilers are the same, it doesn't matter which one you go for. That is a pure lie. All broilers are not the same unless you don’t care to know the different species of broilers and their growth and weight performance. They may look alike but the differences are always very clear in their growth performance and overall health.
We’ll be discussing the 3 major types of broilers species.
There are numerous species of broilers including:
Ross 308,
Marshall Broilers,
Cob 500/700,
Arbor Acre,
Hubbard and Anak; but we’ll be discussing the 3 major ones in this article.
And they are:
Abhor Acre Specie of Broilers
Ross 308 and 708 Species
Cobb 500 and 700 Species
It is important to let you know that Cobb 700 and Ross 708 are improved and advanced species, they are not yet in Nigeria but are in some countries still undergoing development and research. It is anticipated that the Cobb 700 and Ross 708 will achieve in 4 weeks whatever Cobb 500 and Ross 308 achieve at six weeks due to some genetic upgrade and improvement.
Although the major essence for rearing broilers remains meat, they perform differently and meet their target meat value at different stages. Understanding this simple truth will help you always have the best experience as a broiler farmer wherever you are residing.
Do not just take what sellers and delivery guys tell you, conduct your own investigations before agreeing with what they offer or tell you. You know the high cost of rearing broilers so if you make mistakes you will lose a lot of money and jeopardize your investment.
Before going for the type of broiler species, you should have an aim. I mean who are you producing your broilers for? If a suya man is your main target, you should consider raising a broiler that doesn’t have much fat and reach the market size within 4 – 5 weeks. Why? Because the suya men don’t buy too big chicken that has too much fat since it’ll be more difficult for them to roast. Also, to them, the price remains the same however big it is.
I was discussing with a suya man in my area recently because I have a broiler farmer that wants me to get a good market for him. I sat down with the suya man and we spoke to each other and I further learnt some things. The man told me that a lot of farmers just spend their money buying species of broilers that will not pay them at the end of the day. He showed me what their customers are interested in buying; and I saw lean chicken. But broiler farmers are not going to like lean chicken, which is for cockerel farmers.
In our next article, we will discuss the performance of various types of broiler so that you will be better educated in choosing the type of broiler to rear.
