A paddy is a field used for growing rice.
Paddies are different from most other crop fields because they are partially flooded with water. If you plan on farming a rice paddy, you'll probably want to invest in a good pair of waterproof boots. This is one of the tools you surely must need.
I saw Paddy fields in Abakaliki, the current capital of Ebonyi state, Nigeria for the first time.
Paddy, also called rice paddy, is small, level, flooded field used to cultivate rice in Africa, Southern and Eastern Asia. Wet-rice cultivation is the most prevalent method of farming in the Far East, where it utilizes a small fraction of the total land yet feeds the majority of the rural population.
What is the difference between paddy rice and brown rice?
Rice that has been harvested from the plant with its hull (husk) intact is known as rough or paddy rice. The hull is not eaten by human beings, but is sometimes burned for use as an energy source. When the hull is removed from rough rice it is called brown rice.
Paddy rice farming in Nigeria: how the country has fared so far.
Reports and data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), show that Nigeria has produced more rice in the last 5 years than at any other time since the return of democracy in 1999.
The report of the FAO data also shows that between 2014 and 2019 Nigeria had maintained top spot among rice producers in Africa.
The country's rice Paddy production figures constantly rose from 6.0 - 6.2 and to 7.5 million metric tonnes respectively between 2014 and 2016.
In comparison in the last two decades, rice Paddy production has so far averaged at about 7 million metric tons under the Buhari Administration which is about the highest so far.
It averaged at about 4.1 metric tonnes to 4.5 million tonnes, and 3.3 during the presidential reigns of Musa Yaradua, Goodluck Jonathan, and Olusegun Obasanjo respectively.
Rice Paddy production in Nigeria increased from 325,000 metric tonnes in 1969 to 5.1 million metric tonnes in 2019, growing at an average annual rate of 8.76 per cent, according to the FAO data.
According to the President of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), the increase in Paddy rice production is attributed to The Anchor Borrowers' Programme of the Federal Government and ban on forex for food importation coupled with land border closure.
Before the border closure in 2019, a ranking by the United States Department of Agriculture shows that at 2 million metric tons of rice importation, Nigeria was the second largest importer of rice in the world in 2016 only behind China at 5 million metric tons.
Report shows that as of June 20, 2020, Nigeria was the fourth largest importer of rice in the world.
Constraints to rice production in Northern Nigeria:
Northern Nigeria is one of the major regions engaged in rice production, but let us look at the various constraints facing paddy rice production in the northern part of the country.
Drought:
Drought is a major constraint to rice production in Northern Nigeria
because rice requires a lot of water for optimum growth and yield.
Rice requires about 1,200 mm to 1,600 mm of rainfall evenly distributed
throughout its growing period.
This volume of rainfall is rare even in the southern parts of the country that usually receive more rain than the northern parts.
The severity of drought is higher in the uplands than in the lowlands (Fadama).
Rice varieties recommended for Northern Nigeria, therefore, fall within early and medium maturity classes that have the tolerance to and/or the capacity to avoid drought.
In our next article on paddy rice production in the country and Africa, we are going to look at various other problems facing rice producers and how to tackle them in order to sustain the growing momentum.
