Farming sweet corn in Nigeria: How You Can Make A Profit Of More Than N5 Million In One Farming Season
Come with us in this article, as we are going to open your eyes to one of the things you never knew about sweet corn farming especially in Nigeria.
Sweet corn farming is one of the most lucrative farming businesses I have ever seen in Nigeria, unlike the conventional corn or maize crop; a farmer can make a lot of money from the cultivation of sweet corn in Nigeria. The scientific name of sweet corn is Zea mays rugosa.
Sweet corn, which is also known as sugar corn or table corn is a premium crop in Nigeria. It commands good prices in the market and Nigerians consume a lot of sweet corn every day.
Nigerians do not consume sweet corn directly as food; however they consume it as part of other foods like Jollof rice, fried rice, and salads.
If you are a regular party goer in Lagos or the major cities of the country: you must have come across sweet corn in one of the dishes that was served to you.
The cultivation method employed in sweet corn farming is almost the same thing as that of the conventional corn, except that it is strongly advisable that you use drip irrigation and other quality agro-inputs for the cultivation of sweet corn because it is a premium crop, give it that respect that it deserves.
Sweet corn in Nigeria is consumed mostly in the cities having the biggest markets of sweet corn in Nigeria; and they are located in Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Calabar and Others.
Step by step approach for the cultivation of sweet corn in Nigeria:
Protocol for the cultivation of sweet corn on one hectare of farmland.
The following should be done while cultivating sweet corn in Nigeria:
Please note that before starting you should do a soil analysis to know the exact types of fertilizers to use for your crop.
You can recall that we have been emphasizing that you should do all it takes for you to know the type of fertilizer to be used for your crops.
What you should do 10 days before land preparation:
Before land preparation, you should apply a mixture of 4 litres of Glyphosate and 4 sachets of Emamectin benzoate per hectare.
After this, wait for 10 days before planting your sweet corn seeds.
What you should do two weeks before planting:
Two weeks before planting, you should plow, harrow and ridge your farmland. Ploughing can be done several times depending on the condition of the soil.
Apply pre-emergence herbicides after there is any regrowth of weeds which is usually done after two weeks.
At this stage you can add manure, rice husks and other soil conditioners to the soil.
Manure and rice husk can improve the Cat ion Exchange Capacity of the soil.
Drip irrigation preparation:
Lay your drip irrigation tapes or tubes on the farmland.
Drip irrigation is strongly advised as the most suitable type of irrigation for the cultivation of sweet corn.
Plant spacing:
Procedures to follow during planting:
Plant seeds at 75cm (inter-row spacing) by 20 cm (intra-row spacing) (this gives you 66,000 plants per hectare), 75 cm by 25 cm (this gives you 53,000 plants per hectare).
Fertilizer application:
Apply 15 bags of NPK 15:15:15 or 11 bags or 12 bags of NPK 15:15:15 or 9 bags of NPK 20:10:10 (180kg per hectare).
Techniques of spraying of insecticides:
You have to be extremely careful when spraying insecticides on your farm.
If you have the intention of selling your products to the EU and other international buyers, you must be extraordinarily careful in the way you spray insecticides on your farm produce.
We have dedicated a whole article to this and we are going to do more on it in the future as it is very important for all exporters in Nigeria and other developing countries.
Spray the mixture of 4 litres of paraquat, 4 litres of atrazine and 4 sachets of Emamectin benzoate not later than the next day of planting.
Please take note that you should not spray your agro chemicals during the hot afternoons for the purpose of effectiveness of the insecticides.
