How To Start Exporting Frozen Shrimps And Prawns From Nigeria To Foreign Countries
Nigeria is a country blessed with abundant agricultural products. The quantity of agricultural commodities present in this country is unimaginable, but many people still claim that they are unemployed; able bodied young men and women.
I was in a gathering recently when a young able bodied graduate of Industrial Chemistry was lamenting that he had been unemployed since he graduated 5 years ago and after serving his fatherland under the National Youth Service Corps.
In the agricultural sector in this country, every part of the value chain has vacancies, how can someone be unemployed for 5 years after graduating from the University?
Right now, I am going to take you through the process of preparing shrimps and prawns for export in this country. It is true that there are some things to observe and little impediments to cross at every stage of processing agricultural commodities, but they are there to make the commodities acceptable to the international community.
Shrimps and prawns are one of the most sought after agricultural products in the country today; even though they seem to be expensive for the common man in the country. If you are not rich you may find it difficult buying and enjoying the delicacy because it is really expensive to buy.
However, international buyers are all over the place looking for our local shrimps and prawns.
The business is profitable for those who have taken their time to master how to prepare shrimps and prawns to be in exportable condition – that is to be in condition suitable for export to foreign countries.
As an exporter of shrimps and prawns in Nigeria, you may not own cold rooms as it is not compulsory because you probably may be a small scale business owner, but if you can afford it, go get it as it an integral part of frozen shrimps and prawns export. This business can never be done without the aid of cold rooms or refrigerated vans.
If you are an intending shrimps and prawns exporter, you must do the following:
You must understand the contract you have with your foreign buyer very well; what is the degree of coldness required by your foreign buyer?
You must prepare cartons for the packaging of your products
What is the weight of the frozen packages as required by the buyer: 5kg, 10kg, 15kg or 20kg
There will be a washing bay where washing of the raw shrimps and prawns will be done before packaging
You must have an irrevocable agreement with reliable cold room owners, so that as soon as washing and packaging are completed, then you send them straight to the cold room or the refrigerated van for immediate freezing
If you are processing from a factory far away from the port, you must have an irrevocable transportation agreement with a refrigerated van owner who will transport the products to the cold rooms near the port or direct to the ship if you have completed all the operation.
One of the major problems faced by exporters of frozen shrimps and prawns in Nigeria is not properly freezing the products to the required temperature.
You should at all times bear in mind the nature of the country’s electricity supply; therefore never have anything to do with cold room owners who depend solely on power from the national grid. You know that the national grid can collapse at any time and you can imagine what will happen to your products. You will start running up and down looking for where to carry your products to.
Do your business only with established cold room owners with reliable power generation facilities. Ask around and people will direct you to them.
