FGN Says Lekki Deep Seaport To Commence Operations In September 2022 And Will Contribute $360 Billion To The Nation’s GDP
This is the first Deep Seaport in Nigeria
It is estimated that it will contribute about $360 billion to the National GDP when operational
The Badagry Deep Seaport construction to commence in June 2022 after approval by the FGN in April – Lagos State Government
The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has reiterated the need for a rail system that would convey both liquid and dry cargoes out of Lagos.
The Government has disclosed that commercial activities at the Lekki Deep Seaport are expected to commence in September, 2022, stating that the port will contribute $360 billion to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
This information was disclosed by the Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, in a statement he made recently after inspecting the project.
The Minister assured that the Port is automated, and that it would be almost like the DP Wall in Dubai and what you have in Singapore.
The Minister said that he was impressed with the level of work so far done and that commercial activities at the Port will commence in September, 2022.
He said, “Inspecting the Lekki Deep Seaport today, there is huge improvement compared to the last time we visited. The management has assured that the cranes will arrive in June, 2022; while commercial activities will commence in September this year.”
“The Port is estimated to contribute $360 billion to the nation’s GDP.
“This is a private funded project, overtime they would collect their revenue from commercial activities before they handover to the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) through the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
“Obviously, taxes would be collected here, even them, they would pay taxes.
“I doubt there is tax exemption, so we will collect taxes, and I must say that the confidence in giving them the project is because of the taxes we will collect.”
On the contribution of the Port to GDP, he added that growth of the economy will put pressure on the expansion of the project.
“The argument we have in the cabinet is that the need for Lekki is as a result of the fact that the demand for port activities has exceeded the supply of Tincan and Apapa Ports around Lagos.
“We have more Ports than the country needs for now because manufacturing is a big problem in Nigeria, coupled with fact that this is the first seaport in Nigeria.
“Right here you have 16.5 metres of drought, which is good for the country, but the country needs more than one.
“This is because they no longer manufacture those 11 metre vessels, they now go from 16 metres and above, so we need just more than Lagos Deep Seaport.
On the rail system: The Minister reiterated the need for a rail system that would convey both liquid and dry cargoes out of Lagos through the ports, saying if this was not done there would be a problem.
On the issue of extension of the land: The Minister said that they need more land for the completion of the project and urged the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to discuss with the Lagos State Government on the issue.
In the same vein, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Sanwo-Olu says that the construction of the Badagry Deep Seaport will commence in June, 2022 as soon as the project is ratified by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN).
He said that the project will be developed in four (4) phases under a public private partnership arrangement.
The project was conceived about 10 years ago but yet to take off. The Governor promised to compensate residents of economic losses they will incur as a result of the Deep Seaport.
