How To Prepare Sesame Seeds For Export: Cleaning And Packaging
Sesame seeds, also known as beni-seeds are the seeds of tropical annual sesamum indicum. Based on their colour, sesame seeds in Nigeria can be classified into two (2) types, namely: the white/raw and black/mixed.
The Nigerian species have a long history of cultivation, mostly because of its oil yield.
The white variety: the white varieties are mostly regarded as food grade and used in the bakery industry; but the black varieties are regarded as oil grade and are used in the production of sesame seed oil.
During my sojourn in the business of sesame seeds, I have met many farmers and bulk buyers of this commodity, mostly in the northern part of the country.
The white (food grade) are grown mostly around the following parts of the northern region: Keffi, Lafia/Makurdi, Doma, Nasarawa, Taraba and Benue states.
One of my best experiences in this business came from the main sesame seed market in Doma. From the market I was able to source two (2) trailer loads of the white grade in a few days. Theoretically, a 20 footer container can carry twenty metric tonnes of the commodity, but in reality it is only possible if you used loaders with experience. When buying the commodity from the bush markets do not use that theory because the commodity has not been cleaned yet.
When I was taking the trucks to Lagos for cleaning, one of the trucks broke down on the road and we spent more than one week trying to get it back to continue the journey. This is one major problem facing commodity traders in Nigeria. The problem of transportation is an issue that government has been promising to tackle for a long time now but the story still remains the same.
This is the reason why some exporters prefer buying their produce ex-Lagos, that is, they pay you when you bring the product to Lagos. But with a product like sesame seeds, a product that is very hot in the market, you will have to pay premium price for that service.
What Type Of Sesame Seeds Should you Deal in?
The demand of Sesame seeds by foreign buyers for Nigerian Sesame seeds is grouped into two (2) broad categories: there are people who import for the purpose of its high oil content, and the other group is the importers that buy for non-oil purpose but mostly for use in bakeries and confectioneries.
The Sesame seed I bought from Doma in the present Nasarawa state was sold to a company in Israel.

How Do You Clean Sesame Seeds?
Let me tell you something, if you are new in some businesses, people will be bandying all sorts of stories about it; cleaning of Sesame seeds does not take too much of your money or time. It will be much better if you can clean your Sesame seeds right where you bought them, because in that case you will carry the exact quantity that you will be shipping, instead of buying large quantity that will reduce after cleaning. With this, you will be paying transport for what you do not need.
There are companies with industrial machines that charge you a fee to clean your Sesame seeds. You bring your commodity down to their factory; they will clean and re-bag the seeds ready for export. The size of the bags must be given to you by the buyer. It will be in the contract. But if you cannot find any of the factories around, there are manual cleaners who also clean sesame seeds for a fee. I have used them several times without any problem.
I will advise that you use a storage facility that also houses the Product Inspection Agencies so that you do your cleaning and testing in one place, after which you head straight to the port. This will save you a lot of hassles and cost.
