The Difference Between Layer And Broiler In Poultry Farming – What You Must Know
As we are aware, poultry farming is one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors in the world today. Some people believe that when you talk poultry farming that you are referring to chicken and turkeys alone. No, poultry farming is about raising turkeys, geese, chicken and ducks for their meats or eggs.
Every year all over the world, more than 50 billion chicken are raised for food, including eggs and meat.
There are basically two types of chicken which are reared in poultry farming, they are layers and broilers.
Layers are raised for eggs while broilers are raised for meat. This distinction is simply to show you that it can be either for food and meat, and others for laying eggs for further production. Equipment for rearing both species is nearly the same; though with slight differences.
How your poultry farm performs is a function of the breed type you have chosen and your managerial ability on the farm. In poultry farming, your managerial ability is very important as it can make or mar the business.
There are various high-yield layers and broilers that can be used by the poultry farmer. High quality layers and broilers can be produced in hatcheries all over the country. You must go for the most efficient ones.
If you want to start a poultry business; you will normally be advised to start with Day-Old Chicks (DOC) in poultry parlance. These are chicken hatched that same day, making them day old. They are very fragile and must be handled carefully.
After getting your day old chicks from a reputable hatchery, you will then start what is known as “Brooding”. Brooding is the total attention and care that must take place in the first few weeks of the lives of the day old chick; usually between 4-6 weeks after coming from the hatchery.
It is usually a very beautiful experience watching how the brooding pen is prepared as if you waiting for a new born human baby. These steps must be taken in order to achieve success in poultry farming.
Your performance during the brooding period will actually determine how successful you will be in the poultry business.
The advice I normally give to starters in the poultry business is to start with 4 weeks old broilers. When you do this you will encounter fewer problems and build more confidence as you will easily succeed.
The reason for your quick success with this method is that most of the vaccinations must have been administered by that time, leaving you with less to do; as the experts have done most of the works for you.
As time goes on you will get more experience in the business, and subsequently you will start dealing with day old chicks. These are the things I learnt from my many years in the poultry business.
What is Layer Poultry Farming?
Layer poultry farming is all about domesticating the egg laying chicken for the main purpose of commercial egg production. The egg you buy to eat is a product of egg-laying chicken known as layers.
You must take proper care of your egg laying chicken right from birth for you to make maximum gain from the business.
In most cases it takes between 18-20 weeks from birth for them to start laying eggs. They will continuously be laying eggs for a period of about 7,250 weeks. Layers can produce 1Kg of eggs by consuming 2.25 kg of feed during their laying period.
Layers are usually smaller in size and consume less food. Some eggs are white and are produced by layer species like: Isa White, Lehman White, Cock BV-300, Harvard White, Hi Line, Hi Sex White, Server White, etc.
There are other layers that produce brown eggs such as: Isa Brown, Hi Sex Brown, Server 579, Lehman Brown, Gold Line, Bab Cock BV-380, Bablona Tetro, etc.
What is Broiler Farming?
Broilers are birds reared specifically for meat. Their poultry houses are also similar to that of the laying birds with little differences.
A broiler chicken needs about one square foot of space for a farm house. Their young ones just like layers are brought in from hatcheries when they are a day old for brooding.
Broilers need about one month for brooding after which you can remove the protective layers; but at night you must provide adequate lighting.
