Sesame Seeds Turning Into Agri-Gold In Nigeria As N41.9 Billion Was Made From Its Export In Quarter One (Q1) Of 2021
Sesame seeds had always been my favorite export commodity right from time. This is a commodity that is always wanted in the international market. Buyers of this product are always there for the exporters at all times.
It is currently reported that sesame topped the list of agro-export commodities with an estimated export value of N41.9 billion for the first quarter of 2021.
The Federation of Agricultural Commodity Association of Nigeria (FACAN) said that Nigeria’s agricultural export stood at N127 billion in the first quarter of 2021.
The organization said that this figure represents a 128% increase compared to N55.8 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020.
This information was released by the Edo chapter chairman of FACAN, Enahoro Ojiefo during the distribution of sesame seeds and cashew nut seedlings to farmers in the state recently.
He disclosed that sesame seeds topped the list of export commodities with an export value of N41.9 billion, followed by cocoa N35.49 billion and cashew, both in shell and shelled, valued at N13.7 billion.
The chapter chairman advised that sesame alone can fetch the country export revenue of more than $1.5 billion annually if properly harnessed.
Nigeria is currently the fifth (5) largest producer of sesame seed in the world, after Sudan, Myanmar, India and Tanzania.
Sesame seeds come from a flowering plant, mostly grown in Northern Nigeria due to the drought-resistant nature of the seed.
The seed has numerous health benefits, but it also has many industrial uses; it is used for baking, medicine, cosmetics and animal feeds. Sesame seeds have a very high oil content which can be from 44 – 60 percent.
It is generally reported that global demand for the commodity is expected to grow at 4.2 per cent compound annual growth rate between 2018 and 2024.
If Nigeria can key into large scale production of this commodity, so much will be achieved; the commodity is in a very high demand and Nigeria’s sesame is of a very high quality.
Nigeria has a very high land mass to handle this easily; the crop is highly drought-resistant and requires little or minimal fertilizer, which makes it cheaper to cultivate than other crops.
The Edo state chapter chairman of FACAN said that they had designed a four-year master plan to inject one million cashew trees in multiples of hundreds yearly and 2,000 tonnes of sesame seeds yearly into the state’s economy.
They have distributed 55,000 cashew seedlings and tons of sesame seeds to farmers in Edo state for cultivation, in a bid to boost agricultural export in the state.
However, below is the list of top agricultural exports in q1 of 2021:
Sesame Seeds – N41.94 billion
Cocoa Beans – N35.49 billion
Cashew Nuts – N13.71 billion
Coconuts – N8.66 billion
Ginger – N5.57 billion
From the foregoing we can see where agro business is heading in the coming years; governments should show proper interest in promoting this business in order to make it attractive to the youths and young at heart.
It is the way the government is taking agriculture that is making the youths look at it as if it is below their standard to engage in.
This is one area that can lift this country out of poverty if our young people can key into it well. There is so much money to make in agriculture; what we need is for the government to lead the way and the people will follow.
One of the major components of agribusiness is food and it includes creating consumption products such as meat, vegetables, fruit, grains and dairy. This alone can provide an entire army of youths the opportunity to become rich any day.
We have all it takes in this country, let the government lead the way and the people will follow.
Government should also look into the problem of the use of chemicals in the preservation of food products from our agricultural value chain in Nigeria. This problem alone has caused farmers and exporters so many problems that we are beginning to attribute the problem to the proverbial evil spirits.
Don’t forget that we train exporters at our training hubs; if you are interested in getting the best of export training, please get more info from the admin of the forum.
