Both production and exportation of cassava for garri, a staple food have failed in the past. Today, the volume of export of garri to foreign countries has tremendously increased.
Garri from Ghana or any other African country may look or taste differently, but Nigeria still remains the world's best, largest producer of cassava. Even as it is considered as a non-trade commodity as import and exports, Nigeria can harness it's enormous trade. Cassava, also known as Manihot Esculenta is an important staple crop recognized as a 21st century crop mostly for smallholder farmers.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nation (FAO), it is one of some a hundred species of tree, shrub and herbs of genius Manihot believed to have been introduced from Northern Argentina to the United States of America. Other studies recalled that cassava has several centres of origin beginning from the Southern edge of the Brasilian Amazon towards the Middle of the nineteenth century.
It is regarded as the most cultivated root crop in the tropical region and a crop that persistently contribute to food security mainly because of its matured edible root in the ground for about three years and unarguably the sixth most important crop following crops like wheat, rice, maize, potatoes and barley in the world.
Cassava is drought-tolerant in nature that can be grown in areas with uncertain rainfall patterns which usually results in unsuccessful cultivation of many other crops.
Nigeria possesses enormous potential in the agricultural sector, especially in the cassava public-sector. As the highest producer of cassava in the world, Nigeria still records a small total export value when compared to other leading producers like Thailand with the highest export value.
Nigeria and the rest of other African nations are yet to fully harness the great trade possibilities in the cassava public-sector when compared to other regions like North America of the World. Although Gari and Cassava production and exportation is still a pro-business that can change one's future for good within a short period of time.
Garri can be exported to many countries at any period or season of the year.
