Animal Husbandry, specifically, pig rearing is inherent in the Nigerian way of life and it occupies an important position in the farming system in Nigeria. A majority of rural households practice backyard rearing, of course in low scale. Nigeria and neighbouring countries where it can be exported to consume pork well, resulting in high demand and short supply.
Pork is undoubtedly one of the most preferred meat in Nigeria and many European countries. The local supplies of pork in most of these countries are inadequate, which gives investors huge export market for pig meat.
Such a scenario of shortfall of supply, huge demand and a ready market provides a window of opportunities not just for the livestock farmers but also a gainful employment avenue for the many young and energetic, educated unemployed youths.
It is therefore important to upgrade pig rearing with scientific and a commercial outlook, thereby enhancing the marketing prospect and meeting the local and export demand for its meat and meat products.
Considering the massive opportunities in pig business due to its high demand, it is wise to invest. This will create employment opportunities for the local populace and thereby giving a boost to the local economy. All in all, we will not only be self sufficient but there will be national economic benefits.
