As the government continues to map out cutting-edge strategies to advance the agriculture sector, private sectors and organisations have also contributed their quota with innovative schemes carefully guided to take the sector to new highs.
In keeping up with the trend, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has set aside July 2-3; to train selected heads of departments, extension agents, agricultural officers, heads of crop protection, extension advisory service providers, farm managers, and spray service providers – on weed management in cassava farming systems.
The training tagged: “Novel techniques for Weed Management in Cassava Farming Systems,” will hold in IITA Ibadan, with focus on four major modules; covering land preparation and best bet agronomic practices in cassava, herbicides use and safety, calibration, and the business side of weed management.
According to a statement issued by the institute, the goal of the exercise is to: teach participants how to carry out good land preparation and control weeds; building the capacity of participants to understand what to look out for when selecting a site for cassava cultivation; identify different types of herbicides and how they work; demonstrate the steps involved in calibration; create awareness on the importance of safe use of herbicides; and to teach participants the business side of weed management in cassava.
