The government is trying to transform the cassava sector and make Nigeria the biggest producer and processor of cassava. Government also intends to increase the efficiency of production, bringing the best possible methods such as mechanized land production, soil erosion control,, mechanized planting and harvesting.
With the signing of 4.3 billion naira with the bank of industry (BOI), the government wants to support the small and medium scale (SME) industries processing cassava flour. The grant would help them to have access to new equipment such as rotary ovens, chillers, and mixers that would be needed to process the cassava in its varieties
Again some state governments have subsidized agro chemicals, ferterlizers to the farmers to enable them participate fully and profitably in agriculture. Such state governments have also earn credits, huge areas of lands for agricultural activities such as the planting of cassava, maize etc. to employ the services of the teeming population.
Also IITA has come up with thousands of improved varieties that will enable the farmers to produce competitively. These varieties would produce would produce at least 30 tonnes per hectare if their full economy package is respected.
As at now, some farmers have recorded about 70 tonnes per hectare, some about 90 tonnes.
