Wednesday, March 8, 2017, His excellency, the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Senetor Ibikunle Amosun, CON, FCA was the guest of honour to the commissioning of the upgraded Ota Brewery. The three upgraded facilities which were commissioned by governor Amosun constitute another indication of the brewery’s confidence in the fundamentals of the Nigerian economy despite the current economic challenges and signposts its contribution to the socio-economic development of Ogun State and Nigeria in general, the governor had said.
Nigerian Breweries relationship with the Ogun State Government predates and exceeds their footprint in Ota and Ijebu- Ode breweries. As part of commitment to winning with Nigeria, the company has made a public commitment to ensuring sustainable local sourcing of input materials to its operations. Currently, its product packaging is 95% locally sourced and a lot of the ancillary companies who the company have utilized to attain high point in value chain are based in Ogun State. From bottle makers, can manufacturers, crown cork producers, shrink wrap providers, preform makers for PET lines, labels, crate-makers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, hoteliers, etc,
Nigerian Breweries Plc, the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria was incorporated on November 16, 1946. In June 1949, the company recorded a landmark when the first bottle of STAR larger beer rolled off its Lagos Brewery bottling lines. This first brewery in Lagos has undergone several optimization processes.
In 1957, the company commissioned its second brewery in Abia. This was followed by Kaduna Brewery in 1963 and Ibadan Brewery in 1982. In 1993, the company acquired its fifth brewery in Enugu and in 2003, a sixth brewery, Ama Brewery, sited at Amaeke Ngwo in Enugu State was commissioned. Ama Brewery remains the biggest brewery in Nigeria. Operations in the old Enugu Brewery were discontinued in 2004 following the completion of Ama Brewery. An ultra-modern malting plant was acquired in Abia in 2008. In October 2011, the company acquired majority equity interests in two companies, Sona Systems Associates Business Management Limited (Sona Systems) with two breweries in Ota and Kaduna, and Life Breweries Company Limited (Life Breweries) with breweries in Onitsha. Sona Systems and Life Breweries were merged with Nigerian Breweries in 2012
Another malting plant was acquired in Kaduna (as part of Kaduna Brewery) as a result of the acquisition of Sona Systems. Operations were later scaled down in Onitsha Brewery. In 2014 an enlarged Nigerian Breweries Plc emerged from the merger consolidated Breweries Plc. Three breweries were added to the existing eight breweries as a result of the merger.
The company has an export business which dates back to 1986. The current export destinations are the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, United States of America, other parts of Africa as well as part of the Middle East and Asia.
The company was listed on the floor of the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) in 1973. Its market capitalization as at 31st December 2016 is 1.2 trillion Naira, making it second largest company in Nigeria by market capitalization.
With current investments, we are making progress in Sorghum and Cassava value chains. As a locally cultivated substitute to Barley, Sorghum has been a major value chain that Nigerian Breweries has invested in since 1980’s. Similarly, since 2015 the company has been working with a local cassava processing company and the International Fertilizer Development Centre, IFDC, to optimize the cassava value chain in Nigeria by providing industrial quality cassava starch to extract maltose syrup for use in our brewing process.
