Pharmaceuticals, food and beverages are currently leading Nigeria’s exports to new-found markets in Eastern and Southern Africa. Other locally manufactured products also bought in large quantities in these markets include glass wares, care products – popularly called “cosmetics,” chemicals, aluminium, among others, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria Export Promotion Group (MANEG) revealed to BusinessDay’s Real Sector Watch.
The MANEG said local products were already established in Central and West African markets, as they were competitive in terms of quality and standards. But the group stated that the major challenge facing them in these markets was the preponderance of counterfeits by Asian countries.
“The major challenge we are battling with now is cloning and counterfeiting of our manufactured products by Asia countries, who are exporting these products to African markets,” Igharo Thaddeus Nduka, finance and commercial manager, said, on behalf of the group.Pharmaceuticals
Though there are numberless challenges facing Nigerian manufacturers in the area of market exploration, the group said they had put a lot of things on ground to promote manufacturing concerns in the country and make them more competitive.
“We represent our members in international trade fairs/exhibitions and help them develop export markets for their products. We give export market intelligent information to our members and interface with government on the administration and implementation of export expansion grant. We also help members to process the grants where necessary and do capacity building on exports for our members. We do advocacy with governments and lobby government on policies that will impact on manufacturing exports positively,” he said.
He further said they were working meticulously with relevant authorities to ensure that palpable impacts were made within the West African sub-region.
“We are working assiduously with Nigerian government and ECOWAS Commission towards making trademarks transnational within the sub region. We just concluded a forum with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) in order to chart a new course for better performance of manufacturing exports,” he said.
MANEG is a sectoral group of MAN, made up of all the exporters who are members of the association. Its main task is to drive the country’s non-oil exports in the international market through trade shows and exhibitions.
