Nigerian exporters seeking to diversify the country's exports have found easy to light, long-lasting charcoal lucrative, reporting increased demand from Belgium, Spain, Poland and the United Kingdom. Speaking at Wednesday's round table discussion for exporters in the country, Benjamin Kalu, CEO of Bende Export Limited revealed that charcoal had become one of the most lucrative export products for Nigeria.Kalu said Bende sells about 200-300 containers of hardwood charcoal per month to buyers in Europe. Bende has since launched a campaign aimed at grooming one million new generation of genuine exporters over the next three years. Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC, are aiming to boost the country's exporter's base. Currently, Nigeria ranks low in the World Trade Organisation's non-oil exports nations, a trend Bende is determined to change. "My focus is to groom a new generation of exporters; men and women of integrity who can make money for themselves and the country through foreign exchange. "We are working hard to achieve this target in the next three years," Kalu told reporters. The Bende initiative follows concerns that Nigeria depends too much on the oil sector to drive its economy.Source: http: // www. theafr icarep ort.com/West-Africa/nige ria-exporte rs-seek- non-oil-exports-find-market-for-charcoal.html
