THE Executive Director, Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Mr David Adulugba, on Monday said that Nigeria is under utilising its capacity to export products.
Adulugba made the observation while briefing manufacturers on the upcoming exhibition of made-in-Nigeria products in Togo.
The exhibition is being organised by NEPC to showcase finished made-in-Nigeria products from Aug.17 to Aug. 30. The executive director said that Nigeria had yet to fully explore avenues to reach out to other countries with regard to exports.
"We have been exporting toiletries, cosmetics, food and beverages, but we can take advantage of this opportunity to export other products," he said. Adulugba said that Togo was chosen for the exhibition because it served as a point of product distribution to West African countries.
"Geographically, Togo serves as a distribution house for neighbouring states. Its manufacturing sector is not buoyant but a lot of trade is going on there.
"Most of the products used in Togo are imported from France and other European countries," he said. He gave the assurance that NEPC would assist exhibitors to pay some tariffs and other levies for the exhibition.
He said that NEPC would cover only 250kg of products per company, adding that prospective exhibitors would be responsible for payment of such levies on extra goods. He appealed to manufacturers to exhibit commodities not readily available in Togo.
Adulugba said that a sensitisation campaign on the exhibition was ongoing in Togo to guarantee its success.
Mr John Isemede, Director-General, Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), appealed to the manufacturers to register with trade associations in their own interest.
"You can't do business in francophone countries without belonging to a particular chamber of commerce.
"Chamber of commerce is the only vehicle the United Nations allows for international business flow amongst nations,’’ he said.
He added that chambers of commerce assisted their members in loan acquisition. He said that NACCIMA was committed to ensuring the success of the exhibition.
"We will assist you in the translation of your documents into French free of charge.
"You can contact us for the translation of your complimentary cards, pamphlets, posters, handbills and brochures," he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 65 companies were selected from Lagos, Kano and Calabar to participate in the exhibition .
