In a bid to promote the development of Nigeria’s export trade, Chairman, Board of Nigeria Export Promotions Council (NEPC), Mrs. Grace Clark has called on the federal government to have a breakaway from oil dependency in the country.
Mrs Clark said on Monday in Minna at the opening of Niger NEPC zone that she will ensure that during her tenure as the Board Chairman, there will be more exportation of Nigerian products to other countries so as to spearhead the creation of appropriate export incentives.
According to her, “We have to break the oil dependency in the country because there are other products that can generate more revenue in the country than oil”.
Mrs. Clark however called for financial assistance from state governments so as to ensure that major exportation products in the zone comprising of Niger, Kogi and Kwara are harnessed and exported.
She pleaded with other state governments in the zone to emulate the Governor of Niger state in improving exportation products because according to her “Niger state is fast becoming the economic hub of the north.”
In his opening remarks, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Mr. David Adulugba said Niger state was chosen as a zonal office because of the abundance of export materials in the state and also because of the Niger state Governors’ prompting establishing Shea butter scheme in 21 local government councils in the state.
Earlier, the Governor of Niger state, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu said that the state is placing much credence on value change addition as a catalyst towards boosting agricultural commodities for export.
“Our collaboration with relevant international development partners such as GIZ, JICA and UNIDO and has culminated into building of Talba Shea butter villages in Tsohon Kampani and Garin Gora in Bosso and Kontagora local government areas respectively”, he said.
Governor Aliyu who was represented by his Deputy, Hon. Ahmed Musa Ibeto also reiterated his commitments towards providing enabling environment to prospective investors wishing to do business in Niger state.
The Governor said “we are fully committed to the development of agricultural potentials of Niger state into realistic export business and create employment, income and foreign exchange earnings”.
