Governor Godswill Akpabio has reiterated his commitment to work with Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) to promote exports with a call on the council to partner the state government in bringing about fishing revolution in the state for export.
Akpabio made the call Tuesday when the Chairman, Governing Board of Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Mrs. Grace Clark paid him a courtesy visit at Governor's Office, Uyo, directed ''The Commissioner for Industries working with the council should come out with a major programme for the revolution of fish industry in the state''.
The Governor, who said the state government has built an international airport to support agricultural produce, which could be exported from the airport to other parts of the world, stressed that with the good utilization of the airport, agricultural produce would exported at real time.
''I want to thank you for what you have done in the export sector- for promoting exports. I thank you for identifying areas of comparative advantage that my state seems to enjoy in the export sector. I will work with you to create employment opportunities'', he said.
According to him, ''We have developed infrastructure that will support industrial revolution that is expected in the state. We need to develop infrastructure to support industries that will generate products for exports. We believe we can generate employment and revenue for every sector in Nigeria. That is why the Federal Government is cooperating with us to open a deep seaport at Ibaka''.
Mr. Clark, who said the council has marked its third day retreat in the state explained their reason for choosing Akwa Ibom for their retreat was because of the state hospitality and to enjoy the uncommon transformation of the state, hinting that the council would soon commence training of craftsmen in raffia abound in the state for the purpose of empowering women in the area of purchasing power and for generation of more revenue for the state.
She described Akwa Ibom as a state with a high export potentials with rich resource, and identified such areas of interest in fishing, crafts especially raffia etc, hinting that the council has established a zonal office in the state to oversee the state and other neighbouring states as well as plans to establish a common facility centre for processing of fish.
The Chairman, who hinted that with the ongoing construction of the Ibaka seaport, they would assist and support the state government to provide exports dividends for the state, called for proper funding Uyo Zonal Office overseeing Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
Mr. Clark thanked Governor Akpabio for his logistic support in their operations in the state, and appealed for more support in the building of their headquarters office and the provision of operational vehicles.
