Cassava projects Nigeria - The Nigerian government is planning to secure a US$40 million loan facility from the African Export and Import Bank in Egypt to finance the export demand of three million metric tons of cassava chips from China, according to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina.
The private Guardian newspaper Monday quoted the minister to have said the Chinese government had placed an export order for three million metric tonne of cassava chips.
He said the cassava available in the country could not meet the demand, hence the need to seek external credit facility for the production of cassava chips.
“Gone are the days when cassava are allowed to lie fallow under the ground without it being harvested, we are making sure we create market for our cassava, to the extent that the produce would not be enough to meet the demand,” the minister said.
Dr. Adeshina said following the delivery of two million metric tonne of cassava chips to China in 2012, the chips produced in Nigeria are being adjudged the best in the world.
This made it necessary to produce enough cassava so as to meet both national and international demand.
The minister also disclosed government plan to set up four cassava chip processing centres in many parts of the country, including the South-east city of Enugu, South-west city of Ibadan as well as in Nassarawa and Taraba States in the north.
He said 18 cassava milling machines, which will mill high quality cassava flour, would be available in the country before the end of the year.
In a related development, the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) has provided 4.1 billion naira credit facility to the Nigerian Cassava Growers Association (NCGA) for 20,000 cassava farmers to cultivate 60,000 hectares of farmland during the 2013 planting season.
At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the board members of BOA and the members of the NCGA, the Agriculture Minister said the grant could not have come at a better time when the country was in dire need of cassava to meet the export demand.
