Commodity association kicks against ban of export of cocoa beansFederation of Agricultural commodity Associations of Nigeria (FACAN) has cautioned the Cocoa Processors Association of Nigeria (COPAN) against advocating for total ban of export of cocoa beans. The National President of the federation, Dr Victor Iyama, expressed concern over the numerous agitations callings for the total ban of cocoa beans export. Iyama told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that “no one is exporting raw cocoa beans, but dried and semi-processed beans.” He said that cocoa beans from its raw form were removed from the pods, fermented for seven days and sun dried for at least nine to 14 days, remove impurities and bagged. The President argued that cocoa processing in the factory was not a profitable venture in Nigeria at this moment, saying “Cocoa processing is not a profitable venture for now in this country, if the intention is to export cocoa butter, cocoa cake, the bye products or the products, the factors that are affecting cocoa beans export are also affecting the further processing of cocoa.”To reverse this trend and put cocoa business on the right footings, Iyama said that efforts must be made to promote local consumption of cocoa products. “We must embark massively on promotion of local consumption of cocoa and cocoa products in our countries. We started it during the time of Obasanjo because he listened. When this trouble came, we talked at length with our then president and we made him realise where the problem lies,” he stated. “The problem lies in the fact that we in West Africa are producing almost 80 per cent of the world production in Africa and we are consuming less than two per cent,” he said.
