Northern Nigerian traders realize $1.6 million from sale of hides and skins
The Katsina State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Musa Adamu, said on Thursday in Katsina at the opening of a workshop on the development and promotion of hides and skins activities in the state that apart from the lucrative business in the two-day celebrations, more than 20,000 youths across the state were engaged in the hides and skins business.
He said that as the state produced Moroccan leather, which is the best, the state government had initiated programmes aimed at involving unemployed youths in the hides and skins business.
According to him, 18 youths have been sponsored to undertake a one-year training on hides and skins technology at the Nigerian Leather Research Institute, Zaria in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria.
He disclosed that the state government had established three tanneries in Katsina, Daura and Funtua areas in order in order to promote the hides and skins business in the state.
He said that N130 million (about US$866,000) was earmarked for the development of hides and skins activities, while animal laboratories were established in three senatorial districts of the state and new veterinary clinics constructed in the districts.
The workshop, according to him, was aimed at discussing ways of promoting hides and skins activities and expressed the hope that the workshop would be held annually.
In his address, Alhaji Rabi’u Yaro, the state Chairman of the Hides and Skin Traders Association, commended the state government for constructing hides and skins stores at the Katsina, Daura and Funtua abattoirs.
He called on the state government to attract more investors on the hides and skins business in order to boost activities in the sector.
