Nigeria Targets 10 Metric Tonnes Per Hectare Maize Production By 2025: Pandagric Novum Farm To Boost Their Crop Yield, As They Are Already Doing Six Tonnes Of Maize Per Hectare
The Federal Government, through Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), has unveiled plans to support increased maize production from 1.5 metric tonnes to 10 metric tonnes per hectare by 2025.
It is estimated that if the country can increase national average by only one tonne per hectare, it will not only result in self-sufficiency, but could generate export earnings of over $1 billion from maize annually.
For the largest economy in Africa to be having a maize yield of just 1.5 metric tonnes per hectare is appalling and portends great danger to the people. The nation depends on maize for most of children and adult diets.
Maize is the most consumes staple food in Nigeria for many years now. It is also an important staple food in Africa; apart from being consumed locally in roasted or boiled form, it is also consumed in many processed forms as cornflakes, custard, and many other forms.
One of the most important uses of maize in Nigeria is its use in poultry feed production. The reason why poultry meat is so expensive in the country today is because of the high cost of maize. Maize makes up about 70% of the poultry composition. Therefore, whatever direction that maize takes will automatically drag the cost of feed in that direction.
Largest Producers Of Maize In The World:
United States of America: 383 million tonnes
China: 273 million tonnes
Brazil: 115 million tonnes
Let Us Look At Maize Yield Per Hectare Of The Largest Producers Of Maize:
United States of America: 11 metric tonnes per hectare
China: 6 metric tonnes per hectare
Brazil: 6 metric tonnes per hectare
It may interest you to note that the top three countries with the highest yield per hectare are: New Zealand, Turkey and Uzbekistan with 12 metric tonnes per hectare each.
In our next article we will look at why those countries with lower yield per hectare are among the largest producers.
The NSIA Managing Director, Uche Orji, while speaking at a media briefing, recently in Abuja on redefining agriculture in Nigeria for the future said the NSIA has been supporting large integrated farms to boost food production in the country.
According to him, NSIA partnered with a Dutch to raise an agriculture-focused fund for the development of large-scale integrated projects across Nigeria.
Orji noted that Nigeria currently produces 11.6 million tonnes of maize yearly and it is estimated that a national average increase of only one tonne per hectare will not only result in self-sufficiency, but could generate export earnings of over $1 billion.
He stated that the authority supported Pandagric Novum Farm to boost their crop yield, as they were already doing six tonnes of maize per hectare plans but they intend to increase their yield to 10 tonnes within the next three years through cultivation of improved maize varieties and good farm practice.
He maintained that he NSIA as an investment institution of the Federal Government aims to play a leading role in driving sustained economic development for the benefit of all Nigerians, adding that Pandagric Novum, a food and feed manufacturing company located in Nasarawa State, is a flagship project under the joint venture was developed as a platform for diversification and a path to enhancing Nigeria’s protein consumption per capita.
Orji stated that the agency aims to develop the Nigerian agriculture sector enough to ensure increased production to meet local demand, as well as develop requisite infrastructure to ensure improved product quality, facilitate import substitution and provide a driver of foreign exchange earnings from the exportation of agriculture produce.
The Managing Director of Pandagric Novum, Bruce Spain, while speaking on how the company has been redefining the future of agriculture through increased crop yield said the goal of the company is to achieve over 10 tonnes per hectare by 2025.
He said “If we can double our national average of maize from 1.5 tonnes per hectare to 3 tonnes per hectare using good genetics and farming practices, then we will double our national output. Nigeria very quickly will become a net exporter of maize and create food security. ”
Spain added that they also intend to reduce the negative environmental impact associated with opening and farming more land, saying their aim is to get these practices into the farming communities and start to see yields and agricultural output rise in Nigeria.
