Cashew is a tropical tree cultivated for its pseudofruit (cashew apple), and fruit (cashew nut). The nut is the major reason for planting cashew – it is very nutritious. The fleshy “apple” part yields a juice which is high in vitamins and minerals.
Cashews are low in sugar and rich in fiber, heart-healthy fats, and plant protein. They’re also a good source of copper, magnesium, and manganese — nutrients important for energy production, brain health, immunity, and bone health.
Cashew farming contributes about N24 billion (about US$58 million) to the Nigerian economy annually. It employs more than 600,000 people.
Africa, with production of about 2,334,405 tons, is the world’s largest producer and exporter of raw cashew nuts, accounting for more than 50% of production.
Nigeria is one of largest producers of cashew nuts worldwide. It exports over 80% of her raw cashew nuts to over 54 countries, primarily to Vietnam, India and China where they are processed into various consumer products such as butter, food and cosmetic ingredients. Many cashew nut dealers prefer the nuts from Nigeria because of the quality.
