Again this great country called Nigeria has been blessed with another icon in the likes of Okonjo Iweala, he is a beacon of hope for Africa, and his name is Akinwumi Adesina. He is a great patriot for Africa. A man of vision and wisdom, God has blessed Africa with a man that can save us from ourselves.
In a country where only strong party men are given opportunity to serve their bellies and party members to the detriment of the vast majority of Nigerians, we thought that it is finished according to the good book, the bible.
But God in his infinite mercy has once again given us someone that has come to deliver this nation from the shackles of ravenous political party vandals. The man is Akinwumi Adesina.
This is a country with a lot of weak institutions; there are strong but lawless party men and women without strong institutions. With the current situation in the country, economic growth will continue to be a pipe dream, because high quality governance had been elusive for decades.
Nigeria is the most populous black nation on the planet earth, with vast human and natural resources, but corruption in the high places has reduced the nation to the poverty capital of the world.
Let us go to our man of the year; Dr. Akinwumi Adesina. I can remember vividly one afternoon in early 2020, terrible news filtered into the news domain from the international community when we were still battling the worst pandemic ever experienced in human history.
The bad news was about our dear son, Akinwumi Adesina, on “corruption and abuse of office” at the African Development Bank (AfDB). We were surprised; this was an era where the appearance of impropriety is worse than the act itself. This accusation puts Nigerian leadership of the most prestigious African institution on its biggest trial ever. The financial grounds in Nigeria were shaking, nobody was spared, all ears and eyes were wide open.
What happened, in Abidjan, the headquarters of the African Development Bank (AfDB), one disgruntled whistle-blower staff of the institution decided to indict their president, our own Adesina, of awarding contracts to friends and relatives in his four-year reign at the megabank.
Whether it was true or false, you can remember our friend, the then president of the United States of America, Donald Trump picked it up and started running with it. The USA being the bank’s second biggest shareholder and one of the 27 non-regional members could not easily be discountenanced. The action of the USA was to give credibility to the story.
But the truth is that we are used to such actions in the country where the president will employ almost all the members of his family into positions of authority. The state governments are not spared; they employ their children to government positions as if they are the only people suitable for such positions. These acts of impunity gave a sort of credibility to the story, and the fire burned.
The United States and its western allies, supported by the western media headed for a fatal collision that could have ended the flamboyant stint of our own Adesina at the bank. If you remember, the western media were out with headlines suggesting the end of the Nigerian Banker.
If that accusation was proven true, it could have been more than a personal loss to Adesina. Dr. Adesina is the first Nigerian to lead the 57-year old financial institution. This could have shut out the possibility of other Nigerians aspiring to head the institution in future. Remember that our Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was already having a difficult time with Donald Trump, this could have vindicated him.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) finances projects in agriculture, health, education, energy, transport, commerce and other development sectors by lending exclusively to African governments from its $208 billion capital base.
In short, Dr. Adewumi Adesina is our man of the year 2021.
