Figures obtained from the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has shown that Cocoa and its preparations has consistentl dominated the Nigeria’s non-oil exports products since 2006 to June 2010.
Figures made available to Business Day, for 2007, reveal that Cocoa products yielded about $312.6 million (N49.2 billion) as against $300.5 (47.4 billion) for sheep, goat skin and leather; $71.6 million (N11.2billion) for sesame seeds & oil; $79.7 (N12.4 billion) for rubber; $73.1(N11.5 billion) for plastics; $45.5 million (N7 billion) for cotton, yams & fabrics; $47 million (N7.4 billion) for Aluminium & article; $75.9 million (N11.8 billion) for cashew nuts & edible fruits; $36.1 (N5.6 billion) for Gum Arabic; and $46.7 million (N7.2 billion) for prawns, fish & crustaceans.
In the 2008, the product realized $487.8 million (76.9 billion) as against $333.6 million (N53 billion) for sheep, goat skin and leather; $105.2 million (N16.1 billion) for sesame seeds & oil; $129 million (N20.3 billion) for rubber; $100.6 million (16.7 billion)for plastics; $60.7 million (N9.4 bbillion) for cotton, yams & fabrics; $64 million (N10.1 billion) for Aluminium & article; $55.4 million (N8.6 billion for cashew nuts & edible fruits; $37.1 million (N5.8 billion) for Gum Arabic; and $47.9 million (N7.4 billion) for prawns, fish & crustaceans.
The trend continues in 2009 where cocoa yielded $662.2 (N104 billion) million while sheep, goat skin and leather yields $289.4 million (N44.8 bilion); sesame seeds & oil $115.2 (N18.1 billion); rubber $62.5 (N9.7 billion); plastics $70.6 million ( N11 billion); cotton, yams & fabrics $59.4; (N9.3 billion) Aluminium & article $25 million ( N3.9 billion); cashew nuts & edible fruits $45.6 million; (N7.1 billion) Gum Arabic $43.6 (N7billion) ; prawns, fish & crustaceans $44.1 million (N6.9 billion) among others.
For the year 2010, coco a yielded $822.8 million (N129 billion) while sesame seeds & oil yielded $188.8 million (N29 billion); rubber $150.4 million (N23.7 billion); plastics $84.3 million (N13.2 billion); cotton, yams & fabrics $78.7 million (N12.3 billion); Aluminium & article $72.1 million (N11.3 billion); cashew nuts & edible fruits $63 million; Gum Arabic $39.9 million; while prawns, fish & crustaceans yields $49 million ( 7.7 billion).
Although the 2011 full year result is still being expected, Cocoa still tops the non-oil exports with $533.3 million (N84 billion) between January and June.
