Ofada rice is grown almost exclusively in a town in Ogun State, a south-western state in Nigeria. The short grain robust rice, believed to be OS6 and ITA 150 varieties, is named after the town, Ofada.
Unlike white rice, ofada rice is unpolished, has no genetic modification and is cultivated without chemicals so it retains most of its natural vitamins and minerals. It has about twice the fiber content of regular white rice.
Fiber plays a significant role in our digestion process. Ofada rice is very healthy, in fact, much healthier than white rice. They are also known for swelling in size when cooked.
Because it is quite difficult to mill and polish, some or all of the rice bran is left on the grain, giving it a strong flavour and making it more nutritious. It is sometimes processed using fermentation, which adds an aromatic quality to the product.
Apart from the benefits of ofada rice which include, prevention and regulation of diabetes, cancer prevention because of the presence of trace Selenium, weight control, colon cleansing, prevention of Candidia overgrowth, lowering the blood pressure, migraine treatment, calorie intake regulation etc., the taste and pleasurable experience of an Ofada rice meal makes it desired by its consumers.
Two clear and defining features of ofada rice are the strong, distinct aroma of boiled Ofada rice and the hot, spicy stew or sauce with which it is served.
Ofada rice in contemporary times, is regarded as a sign of status prestige by some people and it is typically costlier compared to other available rice.
It is often served at classy parties and celebratory events like weddings, house warming and christening ceremonies, birthday parties etc., home and abroad where it is often described as “designer rice”. The ofada rice meal is served in a unique way that distinguishes it from other rice served at parties such as jollof rice, white rice and stew, or fried rice.
The growing demand for ofada rice at home and in foreign countries apparently because of the large number of Yorubas and other Nigerian tribes who live abroad, presents an excellent opportunity for Ofada rice to be a good source of income and a profitable business for investors.
The volume of Nigerian export of foodstuff to overseas countries is still on a very small scale compared to the demand.
The few exporters of African foodstuff cannot meet with the demand of Nigerians which populations are increasing everyday in the US and UK.
Ofada rice for an example is not grown in those countries so it is scarce over there and highly priced when sold there as its availability is solely dependent on its import.
Obviously, the market for ofada rice both at home and abroad is large, highly promising and rewarding.
You may decide to be involved in the rice processing or you may buy and package it for sale, whichever way, you will definitely record a good return on investment.
