Kola trees are mostly grown in western Africa, but are now grown in many other humid countries. The kola tree belongs to the Malvaceae plant family of the cocoa family. The trees have yellow flowers with purple spots, and star-shaped fruit. Inside the fruit, about a dozen round or square seeds develop in a white seed-shell. The nut’s aroma is sweet and rose-like. The first taste is bitter, but it sweetens upon chewing.
They are caffeine based edible seeds. Caffeine content is 3 times higher than coffee, thus it is an instant energizer. The nut has to be boiled to get the kola extract, but according to researches, it is not addictive like other caffeine energizers.
The well known Cola drinks’ recipes originated from kola seed. In the 1800s, a pharmacist in Georgia, John Pemberton, took extracts of kola and cocoa and mixed them with sugar, other ingredients, and carbonated water to invent the first cola soft drink.
