Stakeholders in the mining sector recently decried what they called the continued neglect of the sector by the government.
The National President of Progressive Miners Association of Nigeria, Mr Sunday, who spoke on behalf of the stakeholders called on the Federal Government to partner with the association to move the mining industry forward.
The association said if given support by the government and the stakeholders, the association would create jobs for the country's teeming youths.
While bemoaning the negative effect of mining particularly in Plateau State, he said illegal activities of some miners had brought untold hardship on the people as most of the gully erosion had been traced to illegal mining.
They said the state had an active mining industry 30 years ago, but now, mining activities were at their lowest ebb owing to lack of proper regulation and the posture of government towards it, which had given room for illegal mining across the state.
Organised mining started in Nigeria, particularly in Plateau State in 1904, during the colonial period, there was systematic mining, which was done according to international standard.
The president noted that multinational companies carried out mechanised mining, adding that the indigenisation policy introduced by government marked the collapse of mechanised mining.
Things, they said, began to deteriorate until illegal mining became the order of the day, with its attendant problems.
The level of control by the government was zero, making the sector to be in a terrible crisis.
