Ports operators have condemned the worsening situation in terms of operations at the nation's seaports, particularly the ones situated in Lagos.
To tackle the problem, stakeholders called on the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to come up with concrete measures to redress the situation. They also advise the authority to develop an appropriate traffic management strategy to stop the influx of touts into the nation's seaports.
The ports operators stated this during a special mini retreat on the harmonisation of the transport industry, which took place in Ikeja, Lagos. They also expressed dismay over the way terminal operators are handling empty containers at the ports.
One of the participants said an acceptance plan for handling empty containers, which would take into account of the increase in the volume of cargo, should be evolved to address the situation.
He stated that he was appalled and dismayed over the uncoordinated human and vehicular traffic within and outside the vicinity of the Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos, when he paid visit to the port earlier in the week.
He said he was not happy that the port area has is returning back to its old embarrassing situation, when it was taken over by those who have no visible business there, and accused the illegal visitors of constituting an obstacle to the smooth flow of business activities at the port.
He called on NPA to evolve a more effective way of controlling and managing the traffic in and around the port, to eliminate the current rowdy atmosphere which is inimical to efficient port operation.
He insisted that NPA must stop those who have no visible business from entering the port.
