Nigeria has the potential to produce quality cheaper electricity from coal to solve its perennial power problem, a team of experts from the United States has said.
Speaking with reporters in Abuja sometimes ago the Behre Dolbear experts, who had meeting with Zuma Steel West Africa Limited, said apart from hydro sources, coal can offer the nation the cheapest means of generating electricity energy mix.
Dodd said it was important for the nation to solve power problem in order to move other sectors of the economy forward, adding that coal provides not only a cheaper means of generation when compared to other sources but was quick to note that we must ensure a clean source of electricity.
He added that that the abundance deposit of coal in the country makes the use of the mineral resources in generating electricity compelling according to him, Nigeria can produce a good proportion of its electricity needs from the coal which has been established to exist in large quantities.
Dodd said, apart from hydro, coal is the cheapest means of producing electricity worldwide. The potential of producing electricity from coal in Nigeria is very high. This could help the country to solve its power crisis for the stability of other sectors because there is hardly anything you can do that does not require the use of power.
He added that the visit of the team was to help Zuma West Africa to build a business case for the mining of coal fields which the company had sometimes won in some parts of Kogi State.
The experts said the investigation of the US company showed that two methods of mining: surfacing and underground mining of coal could be combined in exploring the coal fields.
Apart from exploring coal for marketing purposes, the group said the company intends to establish a coal power plant for the steel rolling mill which it acquired from the federal government.
