Benue State governor, Gaberiel Suswam, has commissioned a multi-million naira sesame seed farm at Agasha junction, Abinsi village in Guma local government area of the state. Sesame, popularly known as “beniseed” is an ancient oilseed and one of the oldest cultivated plants in the word, adaptable to many soil types, but it thrives best on well-drained soil of medium texture. The seed farm project, the first of its kind, is a landmark achievement, even as it is initiated by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). The programme is targeted at increasing beniseed production for export by the state. Performing the flag-off ceremony, Suswam said the overall effect of the seed plant cannot be overemphasised, as it was timely and apt. He also said the product has a high market value. He promised to provide an enabling environment for the project to succeed and urged farmers to consider the project one worth investing in. In his remarks, minister of state for trade and investment, Samuel Ortom, revealed that the feat is part of Federal Government’s efforts to reduce over-dependency on oil exportation, and said that about $6.2m have been committed to promote the increasing production of the seed crop in the country. According to the minister, the National Bureau of Statistics had also revealed that the promotion of “beniseed” had drastically improved from 7.05 per cent to 8.05 per cent, which according to him was highly imperative.
