5 Secrets To Increasing Your Tomato Yield And Growing Big Plants In Nigeria
It is no more a secret that tomato is among the agricultural crops giving Nigeria nightmares as Nigeria is currently unable to produce enough tomatoes to supply to the largest tomato plant in Africa situated in our country.
Currently there is a report circulating that Billionaire Sani Dangote’s tomato factory cannot get enough tomatoes to run his tomato plant profitably. We are calling for the establishment of factories to process raw materials into finished goods in Nigeria, but the ones already established by wealthy individuals cannot be fed with enough raw materials.
If care is not taken, you will take for granted a product like tomato, especially if you live in a place like mile 12 in Lagos Nigeria where you see tomatoes wasted on daily basis.
But as at now, Africa’s biggest tomato processing plant is barely managing to operate profitably some years after the factory was established because it cannot get enough tomatoes to work with. It sounds funny, isn’t it?
The factory owned by Sani Dangote, the immediate younger brother of the richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, is only managing to operate at 20% capacity because farmers are not able to supply the factory with enough raw tomatoes.
The question and what we are looking at in this article are ‘What can be done to increase the yield of tomato farms and also to have big tomato fruits during harvest’.
When farmers are able to double their output for example with the same acreage they have been farming before, they can now get more yields than before with the same amount of effort. So what are the steps to be taken for such feats to be achieved by Nigerian tomato farmers?
The number one factor to consider in finding the solution to getting more yields from tomato farming in Nigeria is the type of fertilizer used by the farmers.
Phosphorous is the key: tomatoes love a lot of sun. I know this practically because I was once a tomato farmer; I may not have operated on a big time level but I learnt a lot of things about the secrets of tomato farming. These secrets I have shown to too many of my co-farmers at that time. One of the secrets is that tomatoes love sunshine a lot. Tomatoes need at least 60% of sunshine every day.
Apart from sunshine, they also need a nutrient-packed soil with particular focus on plenty phosphorous out of the three big plant macro-nutrients:
Nitrogen (N)
Phosphorous (P) and
Potassium (K); you can see where the NPK on the label of fertilizer bags comes from.
Phosphorous is the nutrient that encourages the development of sturdy roots and plenty of flowers and tomato fruits. Farmers who wrongly feed the tomato plants with high-nitrogen fertilizers may have big, leafy green tomato plants with few flowers and fruits. This is what I have witnessed practically and it is true.
Please don’t use high-nitrogen fertilizers for your tomato farm, rather choose an organic granular tomato fertilizer that is slightly higher in phosphorous (it is the middle alphabet in the label on the body of the fertilizer bag).
It provides a form of slow release of phosphorous that is available to the plant throughout the growing season without also pilling on an excess of nitrogen.
We are aware of most of the problems tomato plants have, but by using a few simple tomato growth hacks, you will dramatically decrease the possibility of your tomato plant dying and increase your chances of making bountiful harvest.
This is just the first tranche of the article, we are going to devote quite some time to teach our members and other farmers about techniques to use in order to drastically increase their tomato farm yields.
This is just one (1) point out of five, so stay with us as we are coming with the remaining four (4) topics soon.
