What Is NIRSAL Agro Geo-Cooperative, And Why You Should Register With Them As A Farmer In Nigeria?
We want to bring to our members information regarding opportunities in the agro business sector that they probably must have missed during the outgoing year. It is true that the year is fast coming to an end but our businesses are still on ground and we need to solidify them.
I have had discussions recently with some farmers I thought should be aware of many incentives introduced by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to farmers, especially small scale farmers in the country. But surprisingly many are not aware or are aware but had no idea of how to apply and benefit from any of the programmes. Therefore we have decided to bring the NIRSAL Agro Geo-Cooperative to your attention.
It is wrong as a small scale farmer to be standing aloof and be complaining about the economy instead of participating actively; the present government has done so much to boost agriculture with many different types of loans and trainings.
One of them is what we are going to discuss in this article. The government through NIRSAL launched an Agro Geo-Cooperative model aimed at creating 16, 000 Agro Geo-Cooperatives in the country.
The Nigeria Incentive-based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), created this Agro Geo-Cooperative for the purpose of facilitating farm/field structuring and governance.
In this cooperative, the government intends to create about 16,000 Agro Cooperatives on 4 (four) million hectares of farmland; and also to enroll some 8 (eight) million Nigerian farmers whose responsibility will be to produce 12 (twelve) million metric tonnes of Grain Product Equivalent (GPE) annually over the medium to long term in the country.
The government advised farmer communities to take advantage of this opportunity as a means of employment and also a source of income generation through the support of the productive activities of their self-organized Agro Geo-Cooperatives.
Why should you as a farmer register with a NIRSAL Agro Geo-Cooperative?
It is important for you as a farmer who has access to other farmers in your community or locality to call the other farmers together so that you people can form the cooperative and get registered with NIRSAL. This is an income generating opportunity for all the members.
When you are a member of this cooperative, the government recognizes you and your other members, you can apply for various loan programmes run by the government through the NIRSAL Bank.
Farmers will definitely gain more in-depth knowledge about modern methods of agribusiness in the country. The economy gains more as more people will likely embrace agriculture and the economy becomes diversified.
The Federal Government is highly interested in making farming and agro business a huge success in the country, the government therefore is doing all in its power to empower farmers in all the geo political zones of the country to participate in the programme.
Below is a list of people and organizations that are qualified to register for the NIRSAL Agro Geo-Cooperative:
