Learn to assess risk involved in any venture vis-à-vis the result:
I have decided to start with this point as my number one as I consider it to be very crucial in succeeding in any venture. Most young people aspiring to go into business or entrepreneurship hardly consider the risk involved in the venture before going into it. This is an anomaly, because there is no business without a risk. If you fail to recognize the risk and start the business, when it surfaces it may be the cause of the death of the business. I have witnessed it several times.
You must dig in and find the risk involved in the business before jumping into it. One funny thing about risks is that in most cases they are not apparent at the beginning, or if they reveal themselves, they may be undermined initially.
When a risk shows up when you least expected it or when you are off guard, surviving or working around the risk may be a difficult task.
I don’t believe in poor risk management, I abhor reckless risk taking; one of the things that make someone a good entrepreneur is that person’s ability to accurately assess and understand and manage risks.
If you do not eliminate dangerous risk from your business, it may put you out of business when you least expected it. Consider the opportunity cost of losing out completely and shutting down at an early stage and doing something else.
However, you cannot run away from risk as a businessman, but know that there are some risks that would not pay off, but whether they pay or not, you will sure gather some valuable lessons and heaps of experience. They are assets that will compensate for your financial losses.
You must surround yourself with people with high level of positivity:
Indeed, this is one very important point I have come to recognize as being central to making a new business person achieve success in good time. The people you interact with will surely influence your thoughts and actions greatly. They also influence your beliefs and energy too.
Therefore, always make constant effort to be in the company of those who have positive approach to life in general. Keep away from naysayers, those that are always seeing the dark and negative sides of life.
They will never support or encourage you in any venture you want to go into, they will always be reminding you of those that failed and never remind you of those that succeeded.
These people can be your family members, your colleagues, or other businessmen and women. Just keep away from such people; stay with positive people so as to encourage one another. The world of business is not a bed of roses; it needs people with positive mental attitude to weather the storm.
Nonetheless, entrepreneurship is good, in this day and age white collar jobs are no more there, therefore go out there and cut your own pie. Many have succeeded in the world of business in Nigeria today, there are many examples of youths who ventured and are a great success all over the world.
