A Guide To Soya Bean Farming Business In Nigeria: All You Need To Know
Soya bean is a plant grown mostly for its edible bean which can be used for different purposes. It is a legume known mostly in Nigeria for its high nutritious value.
Indeed the nutritious value is very high as it is recognized very highly in the poultry industry. Without soya beans, preparing feeds for the poultry industry will be a very difficult problem in the country.
In fact, from my experience in the poultry business, apart from maize, soya bean is the most sought after commodity used in feed formulation in the poultry industry.
Though Nigeria is the largest producer of the crop in Sub-Saharan Africa, the country’s production is still is not able to fill the nation’s requirement especially in the poultry feed industry.
Soya bean consists of more than 36% protein, 30% carbohydrates, and a good amount of dietary fibre, vitamins and other minerals. It also contains 20% oil, a property that makes it one of the most important crops for producing edible oil.
We are all aware that malnutrition is all over the place in many parts of Africa mainly because animal protein is very expensive; here soya bean will come to the rescue. It will provide an inexpensive and high quality source of protein comparative to meat and poultry eggs.
My dear farmer, start cultivating soya bean today and your poverty issues are over.
Planting soya bean usually starts in June, and it grows well on all kinds of soil, except deep soils with poor water retention. One important thing to face in farming in the country is the problem of water.
It is a warm weather plant and it is mostly grown in the middle belt, Benue state is the highest producer of the crop in Nigeria, producing about 45% of the nation’s soybeans yearly.
Originally, their growth was influenced by soil characteristics and climate. But currently there are new techniques to use for optimum growth.
These are: choice of land, system of planting, seed dressing, seed rate, spacing and more. Continue reading as we are going to treat all important issues.
Land Preparation
The choice of land for planting soya bean is very important for the business; if you do not have your own land, you can lease land for the cultivation because it can be harvested within one year. Please don’t plant your soybeans in isolated places as they will be food for rodents and pests.
Like we said earlier, this is a leguminous plant, and as such can grow anywhere; but the best soil for planting soy bean is a loosed and well-drained sandy-loam soil which is rich in organic matter.
The pH should be 6.0 – 7.0; you must avoid water logged areas as we said earlier. Clear the land properly and remove all grasses, shrubs and trees. Plough the land, if it too hard, plough it twice. Soybeans do well in land rich in nitrogen.

Seed selection is a very important factor in soybeans farming because it will determine the yield. The seed to be used should be gotten from National Seed Council or any registered Seed Company under them.
They will keep an eye on the farm and then buy back the produce from you at a reasonable price when it is harvested.
Experts warn that soya bean variety selection should be based on maturity, yield potential, lodging, drought tolerance and resistance to pests and diseases.
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) advised farmers to use high quality seeds of the selected variety as soya bean seeds easily lose their quality.
According to the institute, it is common for soya bean, even when stored properly, not to germinate after 12 to 15 months in storage.
Therefore, you should use seeds that are not more than 12 months old to ensure good germination. Always make sure that you sort seeds to be used for germination to ensure that they are free from diseases, insect infestation and weed seeds.
Soya bean is a very important crop in Nigeria; therefore we want to continuously be bringing it to the attention of our farmers so that new farmers can get the knowledge to start farming the crop.
In our next article soon, we will bring to you how you can test soya bean for high productivity by conducting a germination test before choosing the variety to plant. It is going to be an exciting experiment.
