Layers Or Broilers: Which One Is More Profitable For Poultry Farmers
Poultry farming business is among the most profitable businesses in Nigeria today. Though poultry farmers have been crying about unavailability of feed ingredients, but the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has consistently been looking for ways to help out of the ugly situation.
Nonetheless, the demand for poultry products has been increasing. There is really no better alternative for now as even beef is also very expensive in the market.
Is there any alternative for eggs in our country today? Therefore we have to brace it and start looking for ways to increase production of poultry meat and eggs to support our growing population.
One of the ways to do that is to create avenues that will encourage youths and other able bodies men and women to embrace agriculture especially poultry farming.
Poultry farming in itself is a decent business that youths can find attractive if they can understand the way it is run. It is not a dirty farming business, so the youths can easily identify with it.
In this article we are going to look at between broiler and layer poultry farming, which is better for the farmer.
If you are confused about which of the two types of poultry farming businesses to embrace, continue here as we are going to show you the advantages and disadvantages of each type of poultry farming.
Layer Poultry Farming:
Layer poultry farming is the domestication of chicken for the sole purpose of commercial egg production. These types of birds have genes that make them lay eggs often. If you watch them closely, they do not gain too much weight.
They are special types of chicken that need special care from when they are one day old; they continue to lay eggs until they are 72-78 weeks of age.
Egg formation in layers requires about 25 hours; therefore you will discover that as it takes more than 24 hours for the egg to form, even the best of layers cannot lay egg every day in succession. Some layers are more productive than others, and good management also impacts on the viability of the laying chicken.
Broiler Poultry Farming:
Broilers are those birds that are primarily reared for the purpose of providing meat. Their nature makes them grow very fast, faster than our native chicken and layers. Within a short period of between 6-8 weeks a broiler can grow to an optimum marketable size.
They have been scientifically engineered to produce more meat in a short period of time. Broilers typically have white feathers and yellowish looking skin.
It is very important to provide comfortable and growth specific accommodation for the birds. A farm for broilers should have sufficient land area, good water supply and easy access for the supply of feed inputs.
Most importantly, you should select high quality breeds from the hatchery, be sure to take very good care of the birds from the first day up to the 4th week to avoid losses.
Which Poultry Farm Should You Start?
From my experience in poultry farming, the type of poultry farm you should start will depend on the following factors: the skills you have in poultry farming, your starting capital, and the marketing strategies you are capable of employing.
Experience is by far the most important factor in rearing of broilers; an experienced broiler farmer can easily navigate the muddy waters of broiler farming more than inexperienced farmers. This comes first before the cash available for operations.
Marketing:
From my experience as a broiler farmer, it is more difficult to market broilers than layers; if you do not sell your broilers in time they will be consuming more food adding to the cost of rearing them. This means that you will continue spending on them even when they have reached market weight.
But for the layers, you can keep their eggs even if they have not been sold. They, of course will be feeding but they will also be laying eggs.
Take away:
It is easier to setup a broiler farm than a layer farm. Broilers grow faster than layers.
Take a decision yourself and start one today. If your capital is small and you do not have a big space for the business, you can start with broiler and come into layers when your capital grows to accommodate layer farming.
