Organic Farming: What Is Organic Farming And Why Is It More Sustainable In The World Today?
We know that when we mention organic, it means better. But most people do not know why organic farming is better, who benefits from it and how it even helps the environment.
In this article we are going to start a lengthy series on organic farming so that our members will understand what it means and how we can benefit from it.
What is organic farming?
According to Wikipedia, organic farming is an agricultural system that uses fertilizers of organic origin such as compost manure, green manure, and bone meal and places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation and companion planting.
Organic in itself is a system of farming and food production. Organic farmers are types of farmers who aim to produce high-quality food; they use methods that are friendly and benefit the whole food system. They want to benefit the whole planet, plant health and animal health also.
Currently, there is no other defined system of farming and food production anywhere in the world that comes close to delivering so many benefits for wildlife, society and the natural world.
Organic farming is centered on the premise that farming should be a part of nature. It should not exploit or destroy the soil, rather it should enrich it. It should keep it alive by protecting biodiversity while making farming by the people sustainable.
This system does not use synthetic fertilizers that are manufactured with chemical; it uses only natural fertilizers and environmentally friendly systems of pest control, weed and disease control.
This means that our plant foods must not be made using synthetic fertilizers, dangerous pesticides, genetic modification (GM) and ionizing radiation.
In organic farming, farmers rely primarily on crop rotation, crop residue utilization, composting, less use of machines and more manual labour to accomplish their farming work.
Though manual labour can be laborious in getting the work done; but it serves nature better.
In organic farming, crop residue utilization can be used to provide natural fertilization by helping the soil with plant materials remaining after harvesting; including leaves, stalks, roots, and others that can be buried in the soil.
You should understand that organic farming also involves the rearing of animals in natural ways. I have personally reared broiler chicken through the organic method; many people in Nigeria are following the organic method of rearing chicken today.
Though its use in Nigeria is not yet widespread but with time many people will join thereby making the chicken we eat in Nigeria very healthy and safe.
In my subsequent articles on organic farming I will do a full article on organic farming of chicken in Nigeria. I will include all the medications to be used like; bitter leaf, pawpaw leaves and what their functions are.
The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), an international organization established in 1972 for organic farming organizations defines the goal of organic farming as:
“Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects.
Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and good quality of life for all.”
Organic foods do not contain chemical preservatives. They also are not coated in synthetic wax (citrus fruit as an example), and do not contain synthetic colourants or flavourings.
What this simply means is that our foods and fruits are not only healthier they are also fresher because they do not have a long shelf life. They do not cause adverse reactions in our body systems because they do not contain dangerous chemicals in them.
In our company we have dedicated trainers that help both exporters and importers master the trade; discuss with the admin of this forum for more information.
