How To Start And Profit From Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) Business In Nigeria – Part 1

In most cases these customers come to your processing centre to buy off the products from you. I know people who started this business with very small capital outlay and they are still in the business doing great.
What you need to do is simply follow the rules and techniques involved. You do not need to buy any major equipment.
There are processors that already own the equipment you need. You only need to know where they are and carry your dried palm kernel to their factories or mills.
First step to take when you want to start:
Depending on where you want to operate from; if you own a piece of land fine, if not you will need to rent a plot or half plot of empty land.
The only equipment you need to purchase if you want to start as a small scale business is the Palm Kernel Cracker Machine.
You can buy the locally fabricated type easily, they are not expensive and are fabricated by our local fabricators, and you don’t need electricity to operate the machine. They run on diesel engines.
The maintenance is very cheap; it is maintained by local diesel engine technicians. There is no special training for the operation of the cracker machine.
The second equipment you may need is a small generator, this can be the type known as “I better pass my neighbor in Nigeria”. You will only need it when there is no electricity. You will need it to power your electric fan when electricity is not available.
The next step starts when you want to buy your palm kernel. If you are able to buy very dried ones from the farm, then you can proceed to cracking the kernels with your cracking machine. If not, you need to dry it more so that the nuts will not break during cracking.
But in most cases you will buy the not too dried ones, in this case you have to dry them by spreading them on the ground for the sun to dry them. Well dried nuts do not break on cracking. That’s the power of our local technology.
The next step is the third step. After cracking you will discover that the kernels, chaff and the shells are expelled together by the local cracking machine.
Then you have to separate them using the following process:
You have to remove the chaff first by using your fan to blow off the chaff, though there are some other crude local methods for removing the chaff. We will concentrate on using electric fan.
You will achieve this by standing at the back of the fan and pouring down the combination of the nuts, shells and chaff. After the separation you will be left with only the shells and the nuts.
The final step here is to separate the shells, you will achieve this through a very simple method:
Get a container like a drum, fill it with water to about half, add some quantity of red sand to create a muddy solution, mix them properly and then pour in some quantity of the mixture of nuts and shells.
You need to stir the combination well; you will discover that the shell will sink to the bottom of the container while the lighter dried nuts will float. Use a small basket to scoop the kernels for drying.
Dry the nuts properly before taking them to the millers to help you in producing your palm kernel oil (PKO).
After crushing the dried palm kernel nuts by the miller, you will get palm kernel oil (PKO), palm kernel cake (PKC) and palm kernel sludge. You can see how simple the process is.
