Exporting products from cattle requires large quantity supplies which could best be achieved from commercial cattle farms, preferably, modern farms.
Talking of modern cattle farming, it entails the production of cattle in commercial numbers by confining the herd in a paddock, which is a fenced grazing pasture where they will feed on grasses instead of having them move from place to place in search of grazing pasture.
The cattle are kept in a well secured field where breeding takes place in a modernized way. The project can be located in any part of Nigeria because the climatic and environmental conditions of the country are conducive for the survival and procreation of the animal.
This modern paddock method is changing the age long belief in Nigeria that cattle rearing is a traditional nomadic occupation akin to northerners.
Nomadic cattle rearing have deterred many people from investing into the sector due to the Herculean task of moving from place to place on foot with the cattle in search of pasture. This should not be a discouragement for intending investors as there are modern farming methods of rearing these profitable livestock.
This rearing process simply means providing the needs of the animals in the farm from the time of birth to maturity. The paddock is filled with good forage like grasses, herbs, shrubs and young plants. The grazing pasture serves as food for the animals as well as housing. The animals will also be provided with veterinary medical care to ensure their good health. So, the question of the herd moving from place to place does not arise.
The welfare of the cattle in modern cattle farming is of paramount importance for this method to be a success. The welfare ensures adequate feeding, caring, maintaining good hygiene, protection, housing and also that the animals live comfortably in the farm.
GAIN AND PROFITABILITY
In the long run, a lot of gains and profits are obtained from cattle farming. Demand for and consumption of protein food like meat and milk cuts across all classes of people. Protein food is a necessity in our daily diet. Therefore, the market for cattle is very wide and ever increasing in Nigeria and internationally. The cattle and its varied products will be sold in the open market at competitive prices. The products include milk and animal waste. The animal waste is very useful as fertilizer (manure) in agricultural crop farming. The project is a breakthrough one that will usher Nigeria into the league of cattle and cattle products countries.
Gallstones are also gotten from cattle.
