OYO STATE MEETS NAAJ MEMBERS, SEEK MEDIA SUPPORT TOWARDS AGRICULTURAL SUMMIT
Oyo State Government, in conjunction with IITA and other stakeholders in the Agriculture Sector is set to organize its maiden Agricultural Summit. The Summit, which comes up on October 11 and 12, will be beneficial to all stakeholders, including small farm holders.
Tagged, ‘ Oyo State Agricultural Investment Summit’, it will, among other objectives, connect and reconnect those who acquired lands from the Zero Tolerance for Land Policy of the state government with buyers farm produce.
Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, Mr Oyewole Oyewunmi confirmed the Summit in Lagos, during a Media Chat with the members of the Nigerian Association of Agriculture Journalists.
Federal Government approaches in addressing issues of Food shortage in Nigeria would well be complemented, if component states could be more proactive in their individual dealings with Agricultural investment, and policies.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO, had had in 2017 noted that Sixteen [16] states, and the FCT would experience food shortage; and that it had become necessary to provide reliable data on food security status in the 16 states and FCT.
The Commissioner was represented by a Senior Consultant to the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, John Delano.
Delano, who decried that Agriculture is under-reported, assured that Oyo state is convinced that the challenges should be addressed from state point.
He stated that farmers, especially, the small holders, were faced with challenges ranging from Value chain, poor storage, insufficient fertilizers and insecticides.
He said IITA and the state government see Oyo as big Agricultural state, good for Cassava, Cashew, Maize, Soghum, among others; and the state had provided about Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand hectares [250, 000] of Land for Agriculture related investment.
Noting that the Summit, an Agricultural initiative of Oyo state government would be a Public-Private Partnership, the Consultant identified it as a platform for ‘Transforming Oyo Agricultural and Agro-Allied Sector. It would be an Annual Summit for stakeholders is also the beginning for growth in Agriculture sector.
Oyo housed not-less-than Five [5] Agriculture based research institutes, and thus, it’s an ideal hub for Agro-allied.
Soliciting for the support of Media, especially, those who report Agriculture, as special stakeholders, Delano added that the summit would be packed with Presentation, Exhibition and more!
