Aviation workers will on Sunday shut down flight operations at the Kaduna Airport as the various aviation unions in the country jointly resolved to proceed on an industrial action till next week Friday. The unions are: National Union Of Air Transport Employees, Association Of Nigeria Aviation Professionals and National Association Of Aircraft Pilots And Engineers. In a letter jointly signed by the leaders of the three bodies and obtained by The PUNCH, the workers said the strike was in consonance with the declaration by the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kaduna State Chapter, to embark on the action in protest to anti-labour practices perpetrated against civil servants by the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led administration in the state. The letter dated May 14, 2021 was titled, ‘Notice To All Aviation Workers – Total Shut Down Of Kaduna Airport’. It was jointly signed by NUATE General Secretary, Ocheme Aba; ANAP General Secretary, Rasaq Saidu; and NAAPE General Secretary, Umoh Ofonime. The aviation unions further wrote the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Capt Hamisu Yadudu, officially informing him of the development. The Kaduna Airport has both domestic and international wings and processes both local and international passengers. The decision by the aviation workers will bring unbearable pains on the travelling public as the Kaduna Airport is a vital connecting gateway for Northern businessmen and the elite who avoid travelling by road as the Abuja-Kaduna Road has become kidnappers’ den of late. Crayfish is one of the most profitable export products in Nigeria. There are too many Africans abroad yearning for our local crayfish. Therefore this is a lucrative business to go into; as a player in this business, you can do it at a local level or you go into the exportation business.
We will do justice to both local business and the export angle too. The business is very simple to start and it is something you can be doing from anywhere without anybody knowing.
For you to start this business there are certain things you need to understand before going deeply into it.
We need to understand how to preserve the crayfish, the selling process and pricing. Your target market is also very important before you can make it well. You equally need to understand where you can buy the product to make good profit.
The way and manner crayfish business is done in Nigeria has changed since the emergence of the internet. You can do the business from any part of the world; your customers can also come from anywhere.
We are going to cover a lot of areas in our series on this business. You can participate in the business as a retailer, wholesaler, farmer, and of course as an exporter. We shall give justice to all of them to see where best you can fit in.
You know that crayfish comes in fresh, just like shrimps and prawns. So the first thing is to know how to properly preserve it in order to stay long.
How To Preserve Crayfish
The major problem facing crayfish farmers is preservation. Farmers also face the problem of transportation from the farms. But these days there are many means of transportation that are being introduced thereby solving the problems.
Without learning and mastering how to preserve crayfish, then please do not bother going into the business.
If you enter into the business without mastering the preservation, then you will incur unnecessary losses. In that case you must buy the quantity you can finish selling within a short period of time.
Crayfish preservation is not difficult; it only requires some steps that you must follow. People unknowingly lose so many of their products at the farms because they have little or no knowledge of how to preserve the products from the farm.
For example, if you are a yam farmer and you do not know how to preserve your yam for the next planting season, you will surely run into problems with your goods. So it is very important to learn properly how to preserve your farm products.
You may have seen fish that look as if it has dried but by the time you open it up you will be seeing maggots inside the fish. The reason for this is that the fish was not properly dried and preserved before bringing it to the market.
The seller or the owner of the fish will definitely run into losses as nobody will like to use his or money to buy rotten fish.
This is the same way you will see maggots in crayfish if they are not properly dried and preserved. In order to avoid this, you will have to spend time learning the process of drying and preserving crayfish.
You can do the business as a wholesaler by selling the large quantities you bought from other big time producers or from farm gate. In most cases you will have to advise your supplier on the type of packaging your customers love.
Crayfish business is a type of business that you cannot regret doing because; it is a product that is consumed by almost all the tribes in Nigeria and other African countries.
You should therefore be confident when going into the business. Try as much as possible to spend some time with someone who has done the business before so that you can shorten the period it will take you to master.
If you have a shop in the market it is possible to be both a wholesaler and a retailer at the same time.
As a wholesaler, once you are back from the market the retailers will come to collect their products; while you now start selling to your local retail customers. This way you will maximize your profit and have more customers.
Please stay with us as we are still going to discuss how to farm crayfish, dry and preserve it and also how to export it.
Stay with us.

Nigerian Agro Commodity Exporters Wooed By Italian Trade AgencyThe Italian Trade Agency (ITA) seeks cooperation with Nigerian produce exporters and is ready to facilitate the process. The agency recently showed readiness to work with Nigerian Agricultural produce exporters due to increase in demands of fruits and vegetables in the European market. This was made known to the public at a media chat at E-lab Innova training in Nigeria, which was launched by ITA as part of its commitment to increase its trade relationships with Nigerian farmers. It is also an educational training program for the agricultural food sector in Nigeria, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), with some other Italian partners, including MACFRUT, a leading exhibition for the agribusiness industry. Italian Trade Agency (ITA) is the Italian governmental agency that supports Italian business that encourages development of Italian companies abroad and promotes the attraction of foreign investment to Italy. ITA launched the first E-lab Innova in Nigeria. The ICE Faculty Trainer, Enrico, said that Nigeria produce exporters have opportunities to penetrate the European market with vegetables, gingers, avocados, and many other fruits and vegetables. He said that China used to be their main trading counterpart in ginger imports but that Covid-19 pandemic has changed all that. This is the main reason why the European market is now looking for new producers as they can longer source from China. He also said that about two years ago, European importers were looking for a specific variety of avocado, but now they are ready to consider new varieties. Mr. Enrico said that tropical foods like ginger can enter the European provided it has the right quality. The ginger market is an open market, especially well processed fresh ginger. Why Nigeria is well qualified
Nigeria has land, water, and very big financial power, but it needs to find the right technology to produce foods needed in the markets. What they should do
Torina also urged producer exporters to get in touch with importers in Europe in order to have clear information about what they need, type and variety of produce. His advice
He is suggesting that producers should visit trade shows where they could talk with importers on what they need in terms of quantity, quality, type, variety needed in the European market. You must produce the right variety of fruits and vegetables before you can enter the market. The source of information is very important to the Nigerian exporter. The Italian trade Agency Director for West Africa, Dr. Alessandro Gerbino said that Nigeria remains a strategic point for engagement between the agency and other countries across West Africa. Nigerian Government Registers 5.7 Million Farmers: Is Your Name There?
The Federal Government of Nigeria recently said that it has registered no fewer than 5.7 million farmers nationwide in an effort to bring them closer to the government.
This was made known to the General Assembly of Farmers by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development at an event organized by the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kano State of Nigeria.
The big question here is, as a farmer in this our forum, are you aware of this event; have you been registered?
If not, you have to find a way of getting yourself or your company registered quickly.
According to the Minister, the action was to make sure that all genuine farmers in Nigeria were brought together under an umbrella closer to the government so that they can enjoy government’s support directly.
The Minister also commended AFAN for organizing the General Assembly of Farmers, asking the National Leadership of the Association to make sure it is carrying all members of the Association along in all their activities.
The Governor of Kano State where the meeting was held also charged the members of the association to redouble their efforts towards boosting the nation’s economic development for national progress.
The Governor called on farmers to ensure that their voices are heard all over the country, particularly through programmes aimed at improving agricultural activities.
The Governor revealed that farmers in Nigeria constitute about 70% of the population. Therefore the General Assembly of Farmers should be seen as an avenue for contributing to nation building and should be commensurate with the size of the strength of the membership.
The Governor also disclosed that his administration has introduced new technologies and ideas to prevent losses in the agricultural sector.
He also said that the Kano state government would continue to partner with farmers in the promotion of agricultural activities, especially in the area of irrigation farming.
The Caretaker President of the Association, Alhaji Faruk Rabiu-Mudi, said that the association has been reorganized from the grassroots to the national level.
He equally revealed that the association has also embarked on the integration of Commodity Associations into its structure.
The Caretaker President stated that his leadership has distributed farm inputs worth over N100 million to farmers through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
He also revealed that the Association has acquired an office space at the Central Business District, Abuja.
The association has also entered into partnership with a Chinese firm to invest in Rice, Soya Beans, and Maize production in the country.
We are always encouraging our esteemed members to avail themselves of this type of opportunity whenever it presents itself. You do not know what will happen tomorrow; good opportunities can come out of this association, let us get connected and get prepared.
A lot of Nigerian farmers who are mainly small-scale farmers suffer from the ability to raise sufficient finance to run their businesses simply because they failed to belong to recognized associations.
Associations recognized by government, like the AFAN can be a great source of guarantee for farmers who may in future run into challenges when applying for financial support to run their farms.
We are all aware that most farmers in the country still struggle to raise finance through savings and capital to invest in economic activities, and adopt new technologies to boost production.
Please the management of this forum has taken it upon itself to feed it with so many opportunities, now you have to wake up, do a small investigation into where these organizations are located, register with them and move from there.
Stay with us for more activities of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN).

Cucumber is a savory food, but it is also a fruit. It is equally used in the production of some beauty products. This is one of the major reasons why we want to look into the farming of this fruit for profit.
Cucumbers have a mild, refreshing taste and high water content. They help in reducing dehydration; this makes it a delight to eat in hot weather conditions.
Cucumber is a member of Cucurbitaceae family. This family also has other members such as: Squash, Melon – water melon.
However, our main interest in this article is to show you how simple it is to cultivate cucumber. This article will make you take a decision to farm cucumber for a quick profit, and eventual business venture.
Did you know that you can start harvesting cucumber as early as six weeks? The prospect of making good money from farming cucumber is exciting.
We are going to share some insights into how to practically do the business as a starter.
When entering into the business as a starter, I encourage you to start small; after all, the startup cost is low and the gestation period is short. What is meant here is that the period between planting and harvesting is very short.
By starting small here we mean starting with not more than one acre of land. Actually, one or two plots of land can be enough as a starter farmer in cucumber. You can increase as you gain more experience.
Did they not say that experience is the best teacher? Yes, they said it; therefore let us learn this business by experiencing things ourselves. That was exactly how I learnt it.
When you start small you can easily manage yourself in case of unforeseen circumstances that usually crop up in business. We cannot wish it off; they must come up but be prepared to overcome.
Before going into the practical farming principles and procedures, let us look at what I can call the most important aspect of cucumber farming from my practical experience.
They are the activities of Pests and Diseases:
My dear farmer, bear in mind that wherever you find high-yielding plants, there is always the presence of yield-limiting factors. You get the analogy here?
Cucumbers have pests and diseases that affect them at every stage of growth. They have different stages of growth, and each stage has factors trying to limit their high-yielding potentialities.
There are soil-borne pests that can attack the seeds and stop them from even germinating. These pests live in the soil, and try to attack the seeds immediately they are planted.
You also have cutworms that can attack immediately after germinating; this could lead to the death of the plants if not taken care of.
We have leaf-feeding insects; they feed on the young cucumber leaves.
Rodents trouble the farm during the fruiting stage. They bite into the fruits and render them unmarketable.
Cucumber is mostly given to attacks by fungi infections. Some of them are: downy mildew, powdery mildew, and anthracnose. They are rampant during the rainy season due to high humidity.
You must routinely spray your farm with fungicides during your cucumber production. Do not try to mess with fungi.
However, there are many varieties that are tolerant of these infestations.
Some other crop management practices:
To keep your crop in top shape and performance, you need to weed your farm regularly, supplement their nutrients, and have good water supply.
Remember that we said that cucumber is made up of 70% water, so you need to make sure that there is availability of water at all times. To solve this you can sink a well or borehole if the land is yours.
Fungi attacks in cucumber production are lower and easier to manage and control during the dry season when humidity is low.
Do not apply fertilizer blindly, if you have sources of manure, use it at least one week before sowing the seeds.
Staking in cucumber production is very important. Put them in place about three weeks before the plants start to grow vines and tend rills. This will help prevent wetness that makes fungi grow. It will also prevent the leaves and vines from touching the ground.
Run your cucumber business like an actual business. You need to do things that will sustain your business, give your farm a good management.
Cucumber business production, like every other vegetable crop, and indeed other ventures in agriculture has a high potential for profit, but you need to work according to the rules.
In the next article we will discuss the practical cucumber farming methods.
Stay with us.

The Ogun State Government has been nominated to benefit from three Federal Government’s agricultural pilot programmes aimed at further positioning the state as the food basket of the country. The Executive Secretary, National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), Paul Ikonne, made this known when he led the management of the Authority to the office of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, at Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday. He noted that the state would benefit from the Integrated Farm Estate, Garri Packaging Plant, a training programme on soil testing and extension services for 200 young graduates with science and agriculture related degrees. The Executive Secretary added that the Integrated Farm Estate would be sited in the three senatorial districts of the state, stressing estate would involve everything from production to processing, packaging and marketing. Ikonne explained that the Garri Processing Plant would give farmers the opportunity of farming with the belief that their efforts will not go to waste. “We are running programmes and projects which Ogun State has been slated to be one of the pilot states. NALDA’s Integrated Farm Estate is going to be cited in Ogun State in the three senatorial districts of the state. The Integrated Farm Estate is a concept that takes in everything from production to processing, packaging and marketing, we also have residential areas for farmers inside the integrated Farm Estate. “Knowing that Ogun has the highest capacity in cassava production, our Garri Packaging Plant will be located in the state, thereby NALDA will be the off-taker from the farmers, we process it, package it accordingly and move it into the market. “We are training young Nigerians based on the President’s directives on soil testing and extension services, so Ogun State is expected to nominate 200 people in the first phase. Again, Ogun is one of the states in the pilot stage of this programme, it will nominate young graduates that have agric or science related degrees that will undertake this intensive two week training. “They will be empowered by NALDA with soil test kits and implements to collect soil samples after the training and they will begin to generate money for themselves, thereby making a living from the programme,” he said. He disclosed that NALDA would not sit back and watch the state improve the worth of agriculture alone, “the Authority would also be re-activating the 700 hectares of land at Joga-Orile immediately, with the hope that the reactivation will increase the status of the state in food production”. Responding, Governor Abiodun attributed the success of his administration’s agriculture project to the support of the President Muhammad Buhari-led government, adding that his administration holds agriculture as a “triple barrel pillar” that allows the state to feed its people, create employment, as well as generate revenue for the state. Abiodun who also noted that his administration recently started the construction of its International Cargo Airport to boost the agric sector, said that the state also won a bid to become a special agric processing zone, with the state using the advantage of the cargo airport that seats on a 5,000 hectares of land to its advantage. He assured NALDA of administration’s support, especially with provision of land for the purpose of the Integrated Farm Estate. The governor submitted that his administration would also set up a team to look at ways of starting the Garri Packaging Plant in quick time and ensure that the youths and graduates benefit from the training programme on soil testing and extension services. Did you know that snails can lay eggs as frequently as once a month? An average snail can lay up to 86 eggs per cycle; They can lay a minimum of 5 times in a year, it means that the minimum you can get from one snail is 430 eggs in a year.
How is it Possible? That’s the question that would come from the mouths of many Nigerians, in fact from most people in Africa when you mention snail farming. They believe that it is impossible for them to farm snail in their homes.
Snail farming is the simplest farming project anybody can undertake at home; whether you are a landlord or tenant. Take my word for it.
In this article I am going to shock you; you can rear snail inside your veranda, at your backyard, in fact in any available space in your compound. You don’t need to be a landlord to rear snails in the compound where you live.
Snails do not have peculiar odour, no offensive smell, and do not have aggressive sounds that can disturb other tenants. So, why should you not farm snails?
We are starting a series on Snail farming from this article; we will expose our members to the intricacies involved in snail farming whether for personal consumption or for export purposes.
I farm the snails I and my family eat in our home. I make use of old discarded car tires from the roadside vulcanizers in our community. I get their feed from around us. No special feeds other than leaves, vegetables, fruits, etc. Most of them I get free around the home.
So, be prepared to follow us on this life changing journey we are embarking on from this first article on snail farming and export.
Human beings in Nigeria, West Africa and in fact all over the world have been consuming snails from when we cannot specifically say. Snail meat can also be referred to as “Congo Meat” in Nigeria.
The meat is rich in protein, 12-16%; iron, 45-50 mg/kg. It is also low in fat, and contains most amino acids required by human beings.
Snail meat and its liquid have been used in fighting variety of sicknesses in Africa, especially whooping cough. I can remember vividly when we were very young, our mother used to give us the bluish liquid from snails to drink when we exhibit tendency of having cough.
In Ghana, West Africa, the bluish liquid obtained from the shell when the meat has been removed is believed to be good for infant development. The high iron
Content of the meat is considered important in treating anemia.
At the Imperial Court in Rome in the past, snail meat was thought to contain aphrodisiac properties and was often served to visiting dignitaries in the late evening.
The annual demand of snail in Nigeria is about 7.5 million kg; Côte d'Ivoire eats 7.9 million kg annually. It is clear that in other African countries, demand outstrips supply greatly.
Nigeria is known to be endowed with different species of snails; they vary in sizes, colors, adaptability and performance.
To make profits as a snail farmer, you have to know the type of snails you want to raise on your farm. The most recommended species are the ones called the Giant African Land Snails (GALS). They come in three major species.
The Giant African land Snails species include:
Archachatina marginata
Achatina achatina
Achatina fulica
Let us look at these and base our analysis on them as they are the commonest you can find in Nigeria.
Let us start with Archachatina Marginata, it is also known as Giant African Land Snail or Banana Rasp Snail. It is one of the largest land snails in West Africa.
It is a delicacy in Nigeria, and it is of high demand both locally and internationally. It has a high nutritional value, and also valuable by-products.
On full maturity it can grow up to 200 mm in length, and can weigh up to 500 g. It can also live up to 10 years in age if taken care of properly.
It has other species too, and they are:
Archachatina Marginata var.Ovum
Archachatina Mrginata var.Suturalis
Archachatina Marginata var. Eduardi, and so on. In fact there are about 60,000 species of snails in the world.
Archachatina Marganita is best suited for farming in Nigeria due to its rain forest origin.
Prepare yourself for the journey coming from this series; you have no excuse not to farm snails. No matter where you live, you can farm snails.
Stay with us.

NEXIM Bails Out Granite Firm In Nigeria: What You Need To Know
The Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) has reportedly bailed out an indigenous company operating in the solid minerals sector of the economy, Dutse Granite Company Limited.
Why did NEXIM interfere to bail out the ailing company?
The company was incorporated in Nigeria in the year 2011; it continued operations until 2015 when it applied for financing from NEXIM. It is based in the Sharade Industrial Area of Kano State, Nigeria. The company has already started producing granite tiles and slabs for local use in the country, import substitution and export.
This company has been playing in the field of producing granite tiles and tile slabs as a strategy of reducing the country’s heavy dependence on foreign markets for our local tile needs. This is what the country has been asking companies and individuals to key in to save the country’s scarce foreign exchange.
Due to this reason the Nigerian Export-Import Bank ((NEXIM) interfered to bail them out when they ran into problems.
What really happened to them that caused their inability to continue production?
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEXIM Bank, Abba Bello said “NEXIM’s objective was to ensure that projects like this brought cash flow, and in the process facilitate creation of jobs and foreign exchange earnings for the country”.
The Managing Director stated that it was in 2015 that NEXIM Bank first financed the activities of the company since it was established in 2011. He also stated that after sometime, the company encountered some problems necessitating the Bank to disburse more money to the company in 2018 and 2019 to acquire state of the art processing machinery and equipment.
The MD maintained that the major challenge facing the solid minerals sector was poor access to finance. The solid mineral sector requires expensive equipment and machinery due to the nature of their business. Their business requires long-term funding.
The Bank’s helmsman explained that since he took over the management of the bank, that he has developed targeted products to unlock opportunities in the very important sector. He said that those opportunities existing in the sector are, Contract Finance Scheme and Equipment Leasing Framework.
The Chief Executive of The Bank disclosed that “over the next few years, the solid minerals sector will increasingly realize the benefits of NEXIM’s intervention”
The Chief Promoter of the company, Mr. Mustapha Khabeeb, disclosed that if not for the intervention of Nigerian Import-Export Bank (NEXIM), the project that has gulped more than N1 billion in machinery acquisition could have been stalled.
He disclosed that the company has the best machinery for granite processing in the country, and that their products are comparable to those imported from Europe.
According to the Chief Promoter of the company, the company currently has 37 core staff, but there are other numerous workers in the value chain. They are mainly in the quarry, the distribution network and other ancillary product range.
Who are the company’s customers?
Mr. Khabeeb disclosed that the company supplies Nigeria’s major construction companies, and has export orders from Saudi Arabia, Chad, and Ghana.
Nigeria is blessed with more than 40 different types of solid minerals. I strongly believe that if NEXIM can support such a company, in the long run, Nigeria will be better for it.
A 20 ton tipper of granite costs about N130,000 today as of March 2021, so you can imaging the amount of foreign exchange this company will be saving the government by producing this granite here in the country where most of the components of granite are available.
For example, more than 40 million tonnes deposits of Talc solid mineral have been identified in Nigeria.
We of this forum are asking NEXIM to continue with the good work, but they should expand their dragnet to include many other companies that need their support too.
Imagine what could have happened to the company if the Bank broke the chain of financing after one or two bailouts? The company could have surely been dead by now.
We will soon bring to you an article on how NEXIM works, and how you can benefit from the activities of the bank. It is not rocket science, anybody can benefit from their refinancing activities.
Stay with us.
