KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia aims to double its total planted acreage for cocoa to 20,000 hectares by 2020, most of which will be in Sabah and Sarawak, says the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
This would be equivalent to 60,000 tonnes or more of dry cocoa beans by 2020 pending on international market conditions and the yield factor.
"Most of this would be in the interior areas in Sabah and Sarawak - the small holders. We will help them diversify their crops from currently palm oil, pepper and rubber," he told a news conference here on Monday.
"Prices of primary commodities are very volatile on the international market today and this would allow them to ride the tough times," he added.
He added that the government would also provide monetary assistance and other incentive schemes to the farmers.
