An apple is a sweet, edible fruit produced by an apple tree (Malus pumila). Apple is one of the most consumed fruits in the world today.
Green apples which originated in Australia are today grown in most part of the world including the West African countries, predominantly in Jos, Nigeria.
This is an opportunity for willing investors in the country to take advantage of.
Benefits of Apples
Juice contained in apple fruit helps to lessen mental decline as well as protects a neurotransmitter in the human brain called acetylcholine which tends to have age-related function reduction.
Eating one apple per day is a daily recommendation by nutritionists and health practitioners because of the numerous benefits it provides and its major properties, which are essential dietary nutrients that perform many vital functions in the body system.
Adding to the ones mentioned above, apple also helps to prevent a swollen canal in the anus, in other words, called haemorrhoids or piles and helps to flush out toxins in the body.
Apple plays many important roles in the human body which should make it a part of our daily diets. This follows a saying that "one apple a day keeps the doctor away".
European Market for Apples
The shortage of apples in Europe, a consequence of a decline, led to an increase in imports from other countries.
Export can be made to the United States, the Middle East and other Latin American countries.
The leading markets for apples in recent years have been Papua New Guinea, UK, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and Thailand. And other Asian markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
The known and established nutritional benefits of apples have made the fruit a widely sought after product which in turn generates massive income for the investors in the area of business.
Exporting apples overseas guarantees good return on investment as demand for apples is constant and consistent. Although, Australia has been the major exporting country of apples, the market is actually open to other exporters and can be penetrated provided you can be consistent as a business person and the products you offer are of good quality and are able to meet the necessary requirements.
Requirements for Exporting Apples
Different export markets have different requirements for the importation of apples, some of which are outlined here. Growers and exporters are advised to talk with their importers about any additional requirements (such as retailer specifications) they need to meet.
However, it should be noted that apples cannot survive in excessive heat.
If apples are to be consumed at their optimal eating quality, careful attention must be given to proper storage and handling all the way through from the orchard to the consumer. A key goal is that the apples are not stored too long, so that fresh apples of optimal quality are made available.
Apples must be stored under suitable atmosphere, temperature and other conditions. It is important that investors are aware of the need to manage all aspects of the export process for quality standards and products.
