I met my millionaire mentor in his house on the appointed day in knickers. He was watering the flowers in his compound. I offered to help, but he declined. He simply instructed his executive house maid to lead me to his wisdom room. The first place my eyes went to was the magnetic board, just to see if he had changed the quotation. He had, and I took time to study the scripture which he picked from Proverbs 24:3-4: "Through wisdom a house is built and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches".
My mentor walked in quietly while I was still gazing at the quotation "Does it make sense to you?" He asked as he took his seat. "I am trying to make sense out of it", I responded. He further asked, "Would you be surprised if I told you that you not have monetary problem in spite of what you narrated to me when you came in few weeks ago? I replied, "Certainly, I would be very surprised." He then said, "I would be surprised if you are surprised." He adjusted his seat to start the day's lecture which he titled: By all means, be Moneywise.
"My friend, you don't have financial problems; what you lack is wisdom for money matters and that is what I had been trying to point out to you in all the previous lessons I had given to you. What I am saying is that if I give you cash to pay off your debts, I guarantee that you will still plunge into even more debt traps. Wealth building and success generally are about principles. When you violate the principles of wealth and success as you have done flagrantly so far, you are bound to reap financial disaster and suboptimal success.
"As I have said to you many times, success is predictable; so is failure. If you make up your mind to be wealthy, you would be wealthy. Nothing can stop you. On the other hand, you can also dream your way to failure and multiple financial crises. It is a matter of choice. Everything is based on principles. You can apply the principles for success with good success following; you can also apply the principles for failure with unmistakable failure following. The choice is yours.
"The good thing about principles is that they have predictable results. Principles generate results irrespective of who uses them. They do not discriminate on the basis of status , place of birth and the location of the individuals applying them.
"This is the trick. Every time you apply a cause, you generate results. If you want to develop your muscle, do what your exercise instructor asks you to do and in a short while, you would have built the layer of muscles you desire. If you want to achieve sound health, eat what your doctor tells you to eat and avoid what he says you should not touch. You can also predict the results if you violate your doctor's instructions.
"If you want to be wealthy, the logical thing to do is to study the habits of wealthy people especially the principles they employ and apply them religiously, and success is guaranteed. It does not matter whether you are from a poor family or a rich family or whether you are staying in Ajegunle, a vllage, Ajah or in Ikoyi. And if you don't do what they do, you can pray from now till eternity, you still won't be wealthy.
"I am amused by individuals who flagrantly violate principles of wealth accumulation and are expecting to be rich. It just won't happen! Can you imagine an individual who spends more than he earns; does not take time off regularly to reflect on his life; invests in businesses he doesn't know anything about; refuses to save on consistent basis, accumulates liabilities rather than assets; does not believe in serving others; does not invest in his financial intelligence; does not record his expenses; does not sit at the feet of a mentor taking instructions; and he is expecting to become wealthy? He has succeeded in only setting himself up for financial crisis. And this is guaranteed.
God built the world on principles. That is why we don't have to pray for the sun to rise and set, for the stars to appear, for the oxygen to flow into your system, for the day to break and for night to fall. Our God is a God of order; he is not a God of confusion. He is not a temperamental God who blesses people at random. Once you follow the principles He has laid down in any area of your life, you will surely get the desired results."
But the problem is that most of us crave for miracles. God certainly dispenses miracles, but you need principles to sustain the miracles, as Mike Murdock would say. That is what the late Peter Tosh was saying in his music: 'Everybody wants to go to heaven; but nobody wants to die.' My advice is this: Seek wisdom for money matters and apply them, you would be wealthy. Read good books on money. Get a good financial mentor. Arrange to attend workshops and seminars on money matters. Don't spend more than you earn. Invest 10% of your income consistently. Create an emergency account. Put a financial plan in place. Do all those things and watch your financial fortune skyrocket."
He paused as we both took some juice. "That is deep," I said. "You know I can't stop talking once I see you," he said laughing. "A mentor is always happy when he finds a protege carrying out his instructions." Just before I stepped out, he reached for his drawer, pulled out two books: "The Secret of the Richest Man who Ever Lived by Mike Murdock and The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattle", and handed them over to me. These would be my greatest gifts to you this year. Eat them and come back next time with your observations", he said.
He later walked led me to his gate and I bade him bye.
