NIGERIANS REACTION TO THE FOOD SECURITY BILL WHICH WILL COMPEL THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO MAKE QUALITY FOOD AVAILABLE TO ALL
The Thy Global Communications outfit presents to you reactions from personate Nigerians who sees good reasons in the proposed bill which will make it mandatory for federal government to make quality foods available and accessible to Nigerians.
``I think it is a welcome development. At least the bill will show the country is concerned about the well-being of its citizens. They want everybody to be healthy and at the same time they should eat well. Quality of food is what we want in this country.’’ – Dr. Ilori
``To me it is a good development because if you look at the quality of foods sold in our markets in Nigeria today, you will discover that they are not good for human consumption. All manner of products are daily being imported into the country, and coupled with hardship in the economy, most of those things being imported are carbonated foods; some of them are not good for human consumption. I believe that with government agencies like NAFDAC and the other agencies in charge of food items safety of foods in Nigeria both at the local, state and federal levels performing well, food security in Nigeria will be realized.’’ – Honourable Kolawole Otun
``I feel that there should be more control and monitoring of companies that process foods, either raw materials or canned foods, and with that I think we are heading somewhere.’’ – His Royal Highness, Oba Adeogun Ogunbona
``For the first time our government will look at the standard and quality of food we eat. Our food intake matters a lot because it helps people in the country to live in good health. But the thing is that a lot of these farmers want quick sales of their farm produce. Like some farmers they use carbide to fast-track the ripening of plantain and other fruits so they can sell them on time. When they use carbide, the plantain or other fruits looks very fresh but one or two days later, it starts decaying, which is not good and even dangerous for our health. The government should ensure full implementation of the bill so as to ensure food safety for Nigerian.’’ – Apostle Michael Adewale Adejumo
OTHER QUOTES:
``Agriculture/food is the key to building wealth for generations to come. It is important not to just limit it crop farming alone, it’s about livestock, fishery, forestry so agriculture is very broad. It’s about everything from seed to production to processing, marketing, packaging to distribution and consumption’’ – Doctor Ijewere
``With the present reality of non-oil economy, agriculture must take its rightful place to grow the economy and make the food we consume more suitable for human consumption.’’ – Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Agriculture
``The only way to reduce prices of food and attain quality standard in food consumption in Nigeria is to invest properly in agriculture and it’s value chain and produce enough for exportation round the year.’’ – Chief Ayoola Gideon, Atayiese of Opeki Town
